Mentre mangiavamo, è suonato il telefono. While we were eating, the phone rang.
Italian has two main past tenses for everyday storytelling, and they do different jobs. The passato prossimo tells what happened: the events, one after another. The imperfetto paints the scene around them: what things were like, what was going on, what used to happen.
Quick shortcut: passato prossimo = the event (ho aperto la porta), imperfetto = the background (pioveva, era tardi, aspettavo). In the same sentence, the imperfetto often sets the scene and the passato prossimo is what happens in it.
The two tenses side by side
| Passato prossimo | Imperfetto | |
|---|---|---|
| Role | The story's events | The scenery and habits |
| Question it answers | What happened? | What was it like? What was going on? What used to happen? |
| Time | Finished, a clear step in the story | Open, with no stated start or end |
| Example | Ieri ho visto Marco. | Da bambino vedevo Marco ogni giorno. |
For the forms, see Passato prossimo with avere, Passato prossimo with essere and The imperfetto.
Use the passato prossimo for events
Choose it for a completed action or a series of actions that moves the story along:
- Ieri ho comprato un libro. (Yesterday I bought a book.)
- Ho aperto la porta, sono entrato e ho acceso la luce. (I opened the door, went in and turned on the light.)
- Siamo arrivati alle otto. (We arrived at eight.)
It also fits an action with a clear limit, such as a number of times or a stated length of time: Ho visto quel film tre volte. (I saw that film three times.) / Ho studiato tutta la sera. (I studied all evening.)
Use the imperfetto for background
Choose it for habits, descriptions, states and actions in progress:
- Da bambino andavo al mare ogni estate. (As a child I went to the sea every summer.)
- Era una bella giornata e faceva caldo. (It was a beautiful day and it was hot.)
- Avevo dieci anni. (I was ten years old.)
- Mia nonna cucinava mentre io facevo i compiti. (My grandmother was cooking while I did my homework.)
Putting them together
The most common pattern: the imperfetto sets the scene, and the passato prossimo is what happens in it.
- Dormivo quando è arrivato Luca. (I was sleeping when Luca arrived.)
- Pioveva, quindi sono rimasto a casa. (It was raining, so I stayed at home.)
- Mentre aspettavo l'autobus, ho incontrato un amico. (While I was waiting for the bus, I met a friend.)
A short story shows both at work:
Ieri era domenica e pioveva. Ho acceso la TV e ho guardato un film. Mentre guardavo il film, è arrivata Anna con una pizza.
The first two verbs are scenery, so they take the imperfetto. The next three tell what happened, so they take the passato prossimo, apart from guardavo, which is the action that was in progress when Anna arrived.
Clues from time words
Some words often go with one tense, but they are only clues, and the meaning decides: Ieri pioveva and Alle otto dormivo are perfectly normal imperfetto sentences.
| Frequent in event sentences | Frequent in background sentences |
|---|---|
| ieri, ieri sera, la settimana scorsa | sempre, di solito, spesso |
| una volta, due volte, tre volte | ogni giorno, ogni estate, ogni domenica |
| all'improvviso, a un certo punto, poi | da bambino, da giovane, in quegli anni |
| alle otto, nel 2019 | mentre, intanto |
Same verb, different meaning
A few verbs change meaning with the tense:
- Conoscevo Marco. (I knew Marco.) / Ho conosciuto Marco. (I met Marco.)
- Sapevo che era a Roma. (I knew he was in Rome.) / Ho saputo che era a Roma. (I found out he was in Rome.)
Common mistakes
- ❌ Quando ho avuto dieci anni, giocavo a calcio. → ✅ Quando avevo dieci anni, giocavo a calcio. (age is a state, so it takes the imperfetto)
- ❌ Mentre ho mangiato, è suonato il telefono. → ✅ Mentre mangiavo, è suonato il telefono. (the action in progress takes the imperfetto)
