In the box, on the table, at the door.

In, on, at: las tres principales

in dentro, en un espacio cerrado in the box, in the room, in the car, in the garden
on tocando una superficie on the table, on the wall, on the floor, on the shelf
at un punto o lugar concreto at the door, at the bus stop, at school, at home

  • The keys are in my bag.
  • There's a picture on the wall.
  • She's waiting at the bus stop.

At también se usa para una dirección completa: at 25 Green Street, at the corner. In se usa para lugares o áreas más grandes, como ciudades y países: in London, in Italy, pero solo el nombre de la calle suele llevar on: on Green Street.

On normalmente significa "tocando una superficie", pero algunas expresiones fijas usan on incluso sin una superficie plana: on the bus, on the train, on the left/right.

Otras preposiciones de lugar comunes

Además de in/on/at, varias otras preposiciones describen posiciones más concretas:

Preposición Significado Ejemplo
under debajo de algo The cat is under the table.
over por encima de algo, a menudo de un lado a otro There's a bridge over the river.
above más alto que, sin tocar The clock is above the door.
below más bajo que The valley is below the mountain.
next to / beside justo al lado de She's sitting next to me.
between entre dos cosas The bank is between the café and the shop.
behind detrás de algo The garden is behind the house.
in front of delante de algo There's a car in front of the house.
near cerca de The hotel is near the station.

Between vs. among

Between normalmente significa "en el espacio que separa dos cosas": between the bank and the shop. Among significa "rodeado de" o "en medio de un grupo", y es menos frecuente en este nivel: The house is among the trees.

  • The book is between the lamp and the clock.
  • The house is among the trees.

Preguntar y responder "where"

  • Where's the remote control? — It's on the sofa.
  • Where are my glasses? — They're under the newspaper.
  • Where's the nearest pharmacy? — It's next to the supermarket.

Errores comunes

  • I live at London. → ✅ I live in London. (las ciudades y países usan in, no at)
  • The book is in the table. → ✅ The book is on the table. (una superficie usa on, no in)
  • She's in home. → ✅ She's at home. (expresión fija at home, no in home)
  • The cat is under of the table. → ✅ The cat is under the table. (sin of después de under)
  • He's sitting next the window. → ✅ He's sitting next to the window. (next to, no solo next)
  • The shop is among the bank and the hair salon. → ✅ The shop is between the bank and the hair salon. (dos cosas necesitan between, no among)

Ideas clave

  • In = dentro de un espacio cerrado; on = tocando una superficie; at = un punto concreto.
