Para decir cuándo pasa algo, el inglés usa palabras pequeñas como in, on y at — las llamadas preposiciones de tiempo. Las tres más importantes son in, on y at, y cada una acompaña a un tipo distinto de expresión temporal.

En resumen: in suele ir con períodos más largos (meses, años, estaciones), on con días y fechas, at con horas exactas. In July, on Monday, at 3 o'clock.

In: períodos más largos

Tipo Ejemplos
Meses in January, in December
Años in 2020, in 1999
Estaciones in summer, in winter
Partes del día in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening
Períodos más largos in the past, in the future
  • My birthday is in July.
  • She was born in 2015.
  • We usually go to the beach in summer (también in the summer).
  • I always check my phone in the morning.

Usa in the morning/afternoon/evening cuando hablas en general. Pero con un día concreto, cambia a on: on Monday morning, on Friday evening, on Saturday night. See you in two weeks.

On: días y fechas

Tipo Ejemplos
Días on Monday, on Friday
Fechas on 5 May (también on May 5), on my birthday
Días festivos concretos on New Year's Day, on Christmas Day
  • The meeting is on Tuesday.
  • We're having a party on 5 May.
  • I don't work on weekends. (inglés americano; el inglés británico suele decir at weekends, ver más abajo)

Nota: para el sentido general de «por la noche», el inglés usa at night, no in: I sleep well at night. Pero con un día concreto es on: on Friday night. Más sobre at a continuación.

At: horas exactas

Usa at para horas exactas y algunas expresiones fijas:

Tipo Ejemplos
Horas at 3 o'clock, at 7:30, at noon, at midnight
Expresiones fijas at night, at the weekend, at Christmas, at Easter
  • The film starts at 8 p.m.
  • I always feel tired at night.
  • We're staying with family at Christmas.

at night, nunca ❌ in night — esta excepción fija merece la pena recordarla.

At the weekend y on the weekend son ambas correctas, solo que en variantes distintas: el inglés británico suele decir at the weekend / at weekends, y el americano on the weekend / on weekends.

At Christmas y at Easter se refieren a todo el período de fiestas. Para un día concreto, cambia a on: on Christmas Day, on Easter Sunday.

  • I'll see you next week. → ❌ I'll see you on next week.
  • We arrived last night. → ❌ We arrived at last night.
  • Let's meet this afternoon. → ❌ Let's meet on this afternoon.
  • See you tomorrow. → ❌ See you at tomorrow.

Palabras como next, last, this, every y tomorrow/today/yesterday ya indican el momento — no necesitan in/on/at delante.

Preguntar «cuándo»

Las preguntas sobre cuándo ocurre algo suelen empezar con when o what time. La respuesta puede llevar in, on, at, o ninguna preposición, según la expresión:

  • When is your birthday? — It's in July.
  • What time does the shop open? — It opens at 9 o'clock.
  • When do you usually relax? — On Sundays, and in the evening.

Errores comunes

  • I was born on 2015. → ✅ I was born in 2015. (los años llevan in, no on)
  • See you in Monday. → ✅ See you on Monday. (los días llevan on, no in)
  • The train leaves in 9 o'clock. → ✅ The train leaves at 9 o'clock. (las horas exactas llevan at, no in)
  • I sleep well in night. → ✅ I sleep well at night. (at night es una excepción fija)
  • I'll call you on next week. → ✅ I'll call you next week. (no hay preposición antes de next/last/this)
