In the box, on the table, at the door.

In, on, at: le tre principali

Preposizione Idea Esempi
in dentro, in uno spazio chiuso in the box, in the room, in the car, in the garden
on a contatto con una superficie on the table, on the wall, on the floor, on the shelf
at un punto o un luogo preciso at the door, at the bus stop, at school, at home

  • The keys are in my bag.
  • There's a picture on the wall.
  • She's waiting at the bus stop.

At si usa anche per un indirizzo completo: at 25 Green Street, at the corner.

On di solito significa "a contatto con una superficie", ma alcune espressioni fisse usano on anche senza una superficie piana: on the bus, on the train, on the left/right.

Altre preposizioni di luogo frequenti

Oltre a in/on/at, diverse altre preposizioni descrivono posizioni più precise:

Preposizione Significato Esempio
under sotto qualcosa The cat is under the table.
over sopra qualcosa, spesso da un lato all'altro There's a bridge over the river.
above sopra, più in alto di qualcosa, senza contatto The clock is above the door.
below sotto, più in basso di qualcosa The valley is below the mountain.
next to / beside proprio accanto a She's sitting next to me.
between tra due cose The bank is between the café and the shop.
behind dietro qualcosa The garden is behind the house.
in front of davanti a qualcosa There's a car in front of the house.
near vicino a The hotel is near the station.

Between vs. among

Between significa di solito "nello spazio che separa due cose": between the bank and the shop. Among significa "circondato da" o "in mezzo a un gruppo", ed è meno comune a questo livello: The house is among the trees.

  • The book is between the lamp and the clock.
  • The house is among the trees.

Chiedere e rispondere a "where"

  • Where's the remote control? — It's on the sofa.
  • Where are my glasses? — They're under the newspaper.
  • Where's the nearest pharmacy? — It's next to the supermarket.

Errori comuni

  • I live at London. → ✅ I live in London. (città e Paesi usano in, non at)
  • The book is in the table. → ✅ The book is on the table. (una superficie usa on, non in)
  • She's in home. → ✅ She's at home. (espressione fissa at home, non in home)
  • The cat is under of the table. → ✅ The cat is under the table. (niente of dopo under)
  • He's sitting next the window. → ✅ He's sitting next to the window. (next to, non solo next)
  • The shop is among the bank and the hair salon. → ✅ The shop is between the bank and the hair salon. (con due elementi si usa between, non among)

Mostra le risposte
  1. in   2. on   3. at   4. between

Da ricordare

  • In = dentro uno spazio chiuso; on = a contatto con una superficie; at = un punto preciso.
  • Under/over, behind/in front of e next to/between descrivono posizioni più precise.
  • Between descrive lo spazio che separa due cose; among significa essere circondati da un gruppo.
  • Questo articolo si concentra sulla posizione fissa. Il movimento usa spesso forme correlate come to, into, onto e across (un argomento a parte, in arrivo).
