Resumindo: in para espaços fechados, on para superfícies, at para pontos específicos. In the box, on the table, at the door.

In, on, at: as três principais

in dentro, em um espaço fechado in the box, in the room, in the car, in the garden
on tocando uma superfície on the table, on the wall, on the floor, on the shelf
at um ponto ou lugar específico at the door, at the bus stop, at school, at home

  • The keys are in my bag.
  • There's a picture on the wall.
  • She's waiting at the bus stop.

at também se usa para um endereço completo: at 25 Green Street, at the corner. in se usa para áreas maiores, como cidades e países: in London, in Italy, mas, quando aparece apenas o nome da rua, o mais comum é usar on: on Green Street.

on normalmente significa "tocando uma superfície", mas algumas expressões fixas usam on mesmo sem uma superfície plana: on the bus, on the train, on the left/right.

Outras preposições de lugar comuns

Além de in/on/at, várias outras preposições descrevem posições mais específicas:

Preposição Significado Exemplo
under embaixo de algo The cat is under the table.
over acima de algo, muitas vezes de um lado a outro There's a bridge over the river.
above mais alto que, sem tocar The clock is above the door.
below mais baixo que The valley is below the mountain.
next to / beside bem ao lado de She's sitting next to me.
between entre duas coisas The bank is between the café and the shop.
behind atrás de algo The garden is behind the house.
in front of na frente de algo There's a car in front of the house.
near perto de The hotel is near the station.

Between vs. among

between normalmente significa "no espaço que separa duas coisas": between the bank and the shop. among significa "cercado por" ou "no meio de um grupo", e é menos comum nesse nível: The house is among the trees.

  • The book is between the lamp and the clock.
  • The house is among the trees.

Perguntar e responder "where"

  • Where's the remote control? — It's on the sofa.
  • Where are my glasses? — They're under the newspaper.
  • Where's the nearest pharmacy? — It's next to the supermarket.

Erros comuns

  • I live at London. → ✅ I live in London. (cidades e países usam in, não at)
  • The book is in the table. → ✅ The book is on the table. (uma superfície usa on, não in)
  • She's in home. → ✅ She's at home. (expressão fixa at home, não in home)
  • The cat is under of the table. → ✅ The cat is under the table. (sem of depois de under)
  • He's sitting next the window. → ✅ He's sitting next to the window. (next to, não só next)
  • The shop is among the bank and the hair salon. → ✅ The shop is between the bank and the hair salon. (duas coisas precisam de between, não among)
