Quando indichi l'elemento in cima a un intero gruppo — the tallest person in the room, the cheapest phone in the shop, the most interesting book on the shelf — ti serve il superlativo dell'aggettivo: tallest, cheapest, most interesting.

Aggettivo corto → the + -est (old → the oldest). Aggettivo lungo → the most davanti (the most useful).

Perché the? Un superlativo indica una sola cosa — the tallest building in the world, the best day of my life.

Aggettivi corti: the + -est

  • cheap → the cheapestThis is the cheapest phone in the shop.
  • old → the oldestShe's the oldest in her class.
  • fast → the fastestIt's the fastest train in the country.

L'aggettivo finisce in… Regola Esempio
(la maggior parte degli aggettivi corti) aggiungere -est cheap → the cheapest, small → the smallest
-e aggiungere solo -st nice → the nicest, large → the largest
una vocale + una consonante raddoppiare la consonante, aggiungere -est big → the biggest, hot → the hottest
consonante + -y cambiare -y → -iest happy → the happiest, easy → the easiest

Come per il comparativo, lo schema -y → -iest vale anche per molti aggettivi di due sillabe in -y: busy → the busiest, friendly → the friendliest, pretty → the prettiest.

Aggettivi lunghi: the most

  • expensive → the most expensiveThis is the most expensive restaurant in town.
  • careful → the most carefulHe's the most careful driver I know.
  • interesting → the most interestingIt was the most interesting part of the trip.
  • beautiful → the most beautifulThat's the most beautiful beach on the island.

L'aggettivo in sé resta invariato — ✅ the most expensive, mai ❌ the most expensivest.

This is the least expensive option.

In inglese, invece, molti aggettivi corti prendono -est, non most: quindi ✅ the tallest, mai ❌ the most tall.

in e of indicano il gruppo

  • in + un luogo, un gruppo o un'organizzazione considerati come insieme: the tallest building in the world, the best student in the class, the cheapest café in town (lo stesso in town di prima).
  • of + un insieme, un gruppo contato o un'espressione che delimita il gruppo: the youngest of the three brothers, the best day of my life, the hardest of all.

Una regola pratica: in per un singolo luogo o ente (in the world, in my family, in the country), e of quando scegli un elemento all'interno di un insieme (of the three, of my friends, of them all).

one of the + superlativo + sostantivo al plurale

  • It's one of the best films of the year.
  • She's one of the most talented players in the team.
  • one of the best film → ✅ one of the best films (il sostantivo deve essere al plurale)

Superlativi irregolari

Aggettivo Comparativo Superlativo
good better the best
bad worse the worst
far farther / further the farthest / the furthest
  • This is the best coffee in town.
  • That was the worst film I've ever seen.
  • Which station is the furthest from here?

Comparativo o superlativo?

Tutto dipende da quante cose sono coinvolte:

  • Due cose → comparativo: Anna is taller than Ben.
  • Tre o più (una contro tutto il gruppo) → superlativo: Anna is the tallest in the team.

Se vuoi ripassare le forme con -er / more e il funzionamento di than, vai a Il comparativo degli aggettivi.

Errori frequenti

  • She is the most tall. → ✅ She is the tallest. (un aggettivo corto prende -est)
  • It's the most biggest city. → ✅ It's the biggest city. (mai most + -est insieme)
  • He's most careful driver. → ✅ He's the most careful driver. (non omettere the)
  • This is the goodest one. → ✅ This is the best one. (good è irregolare)
  • the tallest of the world → ✅ the tallest in the world (in per un luogo)
  • one of the best film → ✅ one of the best films (plurale dopo one of the)
  • It's the most easy test. → ✅ It's the easiest test. (-y → -iest)

Verifica veloce

Scrivi il superlativo (con the) e scegli in o of dove serve:

  1. the highest … in   2. the worst … of   3. the most expensive   4. the youngest … of   5. the most interesting books (one of the + superlativo + sostantivo al plurale)

In sintesi

  • Aggettivo cortothe + -est (the cheapest, the oldest); aggettivo lungothe most (the most expensive). Mai entrambi, e non omettere the.
  • Le regole di ortografia sono quelle del comparativo: nice → the nicest, big → the biggest, happy → the happiest.
  • Impara gli irregolari: good → the best, bad → the worst, far → the farthest / furthest.
  • Indica il gruppo con in (un luogo: in the world) o of (un insieme: of the three), e ricorda one of the + superlativo + sostantivo al plurale.
