Vuoi delle mele? — Sì, ne vorrei due.Do you want some apples? Yes, I'd like two.

Ne stands for the thing you are counting or measuring, so you don't repeat the noun. The quantity (due, molte, un chilo) stays in the sentence, and ne takes the place of the noun.

Quick shortcut: Ho tre fratelli → Ne ho tre. The number stays, ne replaces the noun, and ne goes before the conjugated verb.

1. What ne replaces

Ne replaces a noun when you give its quantity: a number, a quantity word, or a measure. Think of it as "of them" or "of it", which English usually leaves out.

  • Quanti fratelli hai? — Ne ho due. (I have two.)
  • Hai del pane? — Sì, ne ho un po'. (I have a little.)
  • Quanto caffè bevi? — Ne bevo tre tazze al giorno. (I drink three cups a day.)
  • Vuoi dei biscotti? — Ne voglio altri. (I'd like more.)
  • Hai amici a Roma? — No, non ne ho. (No, I don't have any.)

The quantity can be a number (uno, due, tre), a quantity word (molto, poco, troppo, tanto, parecchio, abbastanza...), or a measure (un chilo, una bottiglia, un po'). Without any quantity word, ne can also mean "some" or "any": Ne vuoi? (Do you want some?)

2. Quantity words agree with the noun

Numbers don't change. But a quantity word such as molto, poco, troppo, tanto agrees with the noun that ne replaces, in gender and number:

  • Hai molte amiche? — Sì, ne ho molte. (amiche, feminine plural)
  • Hai molti libri? — Sì, ne ho molti. (libri, masculine plural)
  • Hai molto tempo? — No, non ne ho molto. (tempo, masculine singular)
  • Ne ho abbastanza. (invariable)

3. Where ne goes

Ne follows the same position rules as the other object pronouns: before a conjugated verb, attached to an infinitive (the final -e drops), or either place after a modal verb. See Position of object pronouns.

  • Ne prendo due. (I'll take two.)
  • Non ne ho. (Non goes before ne.)
  • Vado a comprarne un chilo. (I'm going to buy a kilo.)
  • Ne voglio due. / Voglio prenderne due. (Both are correct.)

4. In the passato prossimo

Ne goes before the auxiliary: Ne ho comprate tre. The participle often agrees with the noun that ne replaces (here mele, feminine plural): Ne ho comprate tre, Ne ho mangiati due (e.g. biscotti). The unchanged participle (Ne ho comprato tre) is also standard, so both are correct. Compare the agreement with lo, la, li, le in Past participle agreement with direct object pronouns.

5. Ne or lo/la/li/le?

Both replace a noun, but they answer different questions:

You mean Pronoun Example
The whole thing, already identified lo, la, li, le Hai comprato le mele? — Sì, le ho comprate.
A quantity or part of it ne Quante mele hai comprato? — Ne ho comprate tre.

With c'è / ci sono, ne is used too: Ce ne sono due (There are two of them). Those combined forms come later, in Combined object pronouns.

Ne has other meanings as well (Che ne pensi? means "What do you think of it?"), which are not covered here.

Common mistakes

  • ❌ Li ho comprati tre. → ✅ Ne ho comprati tre. (a quantity needs ne)
  • ❌ Ho tre fratelli. Li ho tre. → ✅ Ne ho tre.
  • ❌ Di mele, ne ho molto. → ✅ Ne ho molte. (the quantity word agrees with mele)
  • ❌ Voglio ne due. → ✅ Ne voglio due. / ✅ Voglio prenderne due.
