Il libro? Lo voglio leggere stasera. / Voglio leggerlo stasera. The book? I want to read it tonight.
The object pronouns (mi, ti, lo, la, ci, vi, li, le, gli) are small words with a fixed place. They go before a conjugated verb, and attach to the end of an infinitive. After a modal verb you can choose either place.
Quick shortcut: conjugated verb → pronoun before (lo vedo); infinitive → pronoun attached (vederlo, with the final -e dropped); modal + infinitive → either lo voglio vedere or voglio vederlo.
1. Before a conjugated verb
The pronoun stands right before the verb, and non goes before the pronoun:
- Lo vedo ogni giorno. (I see him every day.)
- Non la conosco. (I don't know her.)
- Gli parlavo spesso. (I often spoke to him.)
In the passato prossimo, the pronoun stands before the auxiliary: L'ho visto. Le ho scritto. A preceding direct pronoun lo, la, li, le makes the participle agree (L'ho vista, Li ho visti, Le ho comprate; with mi, ti, ci, vi it is optional), while an indirect pronoun does not (Le ho scritto). See Direct object pronouns and Indirect object pronouns.
2. Attached to an infinitive
The pronoun joins the infinitive and the final -e drops: vedere + lo = vederlo, dare + mi = darmi, scrivere + gli = scrivergli.
- È bello vederti. (It's nice to see you.)
- Ho deciso di chiamarla. (I decided to call her.)
- Vado a prenderli. (I'm going to pick them up.)
- Senza dirmi niente, è uscito. (Without telling me anything, he left.)
3. With a modal verb: two places
With potere, volere, dovere (and also sapere), the pronoun can go before the modal or attach to the infinitive. The meaning is the same:
| Before the modal | Attached to the infinitive |
|---|---|
| Lo voglio vedere. | Voglio vederlo. |
| La devo chiamare. | Devo chiamarla. |
| Ti posso aiutare? | Posso aiutarti? |
| Non lo voglio vedere. | Non voglio vederlo. |
The pronoun cannot sit in the middle: not Voglio lo vedere. For the modal verbs themselves, see Modal verbs: potere, volere, dovere + infinitive.
Reflexive verbs work the same way: Mi devo alzare or Devo alzarmi. See Reflexive verbs (present tense).
4. Affirmative imperative (tu)
With a tu command, the pronoun attaches to the end of the verb: Chiamalo! Aiutami! Scrivile! After the short forms da', di', fa', sta', va' most pronouns double their first letter: dammi, dimmi, fammi, dillo. (With gli there is no doubling: dagli, digli.) In the negative, the pronoun can go before the verb or attach to the infinitive: Non chiamarlo! / Non lo chiamare! See The imperative with tu.
Only one pronoun here
This article covers a single pronoun. When a direct and an indirect pronoun meet (me lo dai), they combine: see Combined object pronouns.
