Serve per dire chi sei, dove ti trovi e come sono le cose: I am a student, She is happy, They are from Spain.

Al presente, to be ha tre forme: am, is e are.

Le tre forme: am, is, are

Soggetto Forma Esempio
I am I am tired.
he / she / it is She is a teacher.
you / we / they are We are ready.

Quindi in realtà c'è solo una cosa da ricordare: I → am, he/she/it → is, e you/we/they → are.

  • He is my brother.
  • It is a nice day.
  • You are very kind.
  • We are at home.
  • They are friends.

In inglese, invece, nelle frasi normali il soggetto va espresso: ❌ Is my brother non è corretto; serve il pronome — ✅ He is my brother.

Nomi e altri sostantivi come soggetto

Un nome proprio o un sostantivo al singolare (una sola persona o cosa) si comporta come he/she/it, quindi prende is. Un sostantivo al plurale (più di uno) si comporta come they, quindi prende are.

  • Maria is from Brazil. (una persona → is)
  • My parents are from Brazil. (più di una persona → are)
  • The book is on the table.
  • The books are on the table.

Forme contratte

Forma completa Forma contratta
I am I'm
he/she/it is he's / she's / it's
you/we/they are you're / we're / they're
  • I'm hungry.
  • She's at work.
  • We're late.

"Yes, I am.", mai ❌ "Yes, I'm."

Come formare la negazione

Per formare una negazione, basta aggiungere not subito dopo am, is o are.

  • I am not ready. → forma contratta: I'm not ready.
  • He is not here. → forme contratte: He isn't here. / He's not here.
  • They are not busy. → forme contratte: They aren't busy. / They're not busy.

Nota che is not e are not hanno ciascuno due possibili forme contratte (isn't / he's not, aren't / they're not) — entrambe corrette, quindi usa quella che ti suona più naturale. Per am not, meglio attenersi a I'm not — in alcune varietà regionali dell'inglese si sente talvolta amn't, ma non fa parte dell'inglese standard scritto.

Come fare domande

Per fare una normale domanda sì/no, si mette am, is o are prima del soggetto:

  • Are you a doctor?
  • Is she at home?
  • Am I late?
  • Are they ready?

(Nel parlato informale si sente a volte You are a doctor? con intonazione ascendente, per verificare o esprimere sorpresa — ma la forma standard per le domande resta Are you a doctor?, ed è quella da usare.)

Nelle risposte brevi più complete o cortesi, di solito si ripete am, is o are:

  • "Are you tired?" — "Yes, I am." / "No, I'm not."
  • "Is it cold outside?" — "Yes, it is." / "No, it isn't."

  • Where are you from?
  • What is your name?
  • How is your mother?

Errori comuni

  • I is happy. → ✅ I am happy. (I prende sempre am, mai is o are)
  • She are my friend. → ✅ She is my friend. (she prende is)
  • They is students. → ✅ They are students. (they prende are)
  • He hungry. → ✅ He is hungry. (non dimenticare is prima di un aggettivo — in inglese non si può omettere il verbo to be)
  • You is late. → ✅ You are late.

Verifica rapida

  1. I ____ from Poland.
