so と such はどちらも強調を表す言葉で、形容詞や副詞、名詞をより強く印象づける。ただし、どちらを使うかは後ろに何が続くかで決まる。so は形容詞や副詞の前に置き、such は名詞句の前に置く（多くの場合、名詞の前に形容詞も入る）。

  • The film was so good.（so ＋ 形容詞、名詞なし）
  • It was such a good film.（such ＋ a ＋ 形容詞 ＋ 名詞）

この2つの文はほとんど同じ意味だが、ポイントは強調語の後ろに名詞が続くかどうかである。

早わかりルール： 強調語の後ろに形容詞・副詞だけが続くなら、たいてい so（so tired、so quickly）。名詞句を強調するなら、たいてい such（such a nice day）。ただし many、much、few、little を使った数量表現では、常に so（so many people、so much time）。

so ＋ 形容詞・副詞

so は名詞を伴わず、形容詞や副詞の直前に置く。

so ＋ 副詞 He drives so carefully.

so は many、much、few、little の前に置いて、数量を強調することもできる。

such ＋（a/an）＋ 名詞

日常的な英語では、名詞句を強調するとき（間に形容詞が入っていても）、such を使うのが普通である。単数可算名詞の場合、冠詞の a/an は such の後ろ、形容詞があればその前に置く。

such a/an ＋ 形容詞 ＋ 名詞（単数） It was such a great party.
such a/an ＋ 形容詞 ＋ 名詞（単数） She's such an honest person.
such ＋ 形容詞 ＋ 名詞（複数） They are such lovely people.
such ＋ 形容詞 ＋ 不可算名詞 We had such nice weather.

such は形容詞なしで名詞だけを強調することもできる。

  • He's such a genius!
  • That was such a shock.

日本語には冠詞がないため、such a good film の a/an を落としがち。単数可算名詞を強調するときは、such の後ろに必ず a/an を入れる：✅ such a good film、❌ such good film。

よくある混同：many、much、few、little を使うときは ✅ so many/much ＋ 名詞であり、❌ such many/much とは言わない（上の so many/much のパターンを参照）。such は、性質や評価を含む名詞句を強調するときに使い、単なる数量表現には使わない。

so...that と such...that：結果を表す構文

どちらも、後ろに that 節を続けて、強調した内容の結果を表すことができる。

so ＋ 形容詞／副詞 ＋ that ＋ 節：

  • The soup was so hot that I burned my tongue.
  • She ran so fast that nobody could catch her.
  • There was so much traffic that we missed the flight.

such（＋ a/an）＋（形容詞）＋ 名詞 ＋ that ＋ 節：

  • It was such a shock that I couldn't speak.
  • It was such a hot day that we stayed indoors.
  • He's such a good cook that people ask for his recipes.
  • They are such generous people that everyone loves them.

話し言葉では that が省略されることも多いが、意味は変わらない。It was so hot (that) I couldn't sleep.

よくある間違い

  • ❌ It was such good. → ✅ It was so good.（good の後ろに名詞がないので such ではなく so）
  • ❌ She's so nice person. → ✅ She's such a nice person.（後ろに名詞が続くので such、そして a を忘れない）
  • ❌ It's a such big house. → ✅ It's such a big house.（such は冠詞 a の前に置く。後ろではない）
  • ❌ There were such many people. → ✅ There were so many people.（many/much/few/little ＋ 名詞は such ではなく so）
  • ❌ He's so a talented musician. → ✅ He's such a talented musician.（後ろに名詞が続くので so a ではなく such a）
