Это самая красивая улица. Он самый высокий в классе. Это лучший фильм.This is the most beautiful street. He is the tallest in the class. This is the best film.

English builds the superlative with -est or most (the fastest, the most interesting). Russian puts a separate word, самый, before an ordinary adjective, so the adjective keeps its usual form and keeps agreeing with its noun. The "more" forms are in Comparative adjectives (быстрее, лучше, более быстрый); the endings are in Adjective and pronoun declension across the cases.

Quick shortcut: for many adjectives, "the most …" is самый + the ordinary adjective, and both words agree with the noun (самый новый дом, самая новая книга). Two frequent adjectives have their own forms: лучший ("best") and худший ("worst"). The place is named with в + prepositional (в классе, в мире), the group with из + genitive plural (из братьев).

самый + adjective

Самый stands before the ordinary adjective, not before the comparative form. Both words agree with the noun in gender, number and case:

  • самый новый дом (the newest house)
  • самая новая книга (the newest book)
  • самое новое здание (the newest building)
  • самые новые дома (the newest houses)

In the other cases both words change like an ordinary adjective (see Adjective and pronoun declension across the cases). Here is the masculine singular:

Case самый большой дом
Nominative самый большой дом
Genitive самого большого дома
Dative самому большому дому
Accusative самый большой дом
Instrumental самым большим домом
Prepositional (о) самом большом доме

With a masculine animate noun, the accusative is the same as the genitive (самого умного студента); with an inanimate noun it is the same as the nominative.

  • Мы живём в самом большом доме города. (We live in the biggest house in the city.)
  • Я знаю самого умного студента в группе. (I know the smartest student in the group.)

лучший and худший

Лучший ("best") and худший ("worst") are the superlatives of хороший and плохой. They decline like ordinary adjectives (лучший, лучшая, лучшее, лучшие), and they usually mean "the best" on their own, so they do not need самый:

  • Это лучший фильм года. (This is the best film of the year.)
  • Она моя лучшая подруга. (She is my best friend.)
  • Это худший день в моей жизни. (This is the worst day of my life.)

Самый лучший is also heard in everyday speech and adds emphasis. In families, старший and младший name the older or younger one (старший брат, младшая сестра); with several children they can mean the oldest and the youngest.

In which place, of which group: в and из

The place or the collective the superlative applies to comes after в + prepositional (в классе, в мире, в городе). A set of people or things comes after из + genitive plural (из братьев, из всех книг; the forms are in The genitive case: plural forms):

  • Он самый высокий в классе. (He is the tallest in the class.)
  • Это самая длинная река в Европе. (This is the longest river in Europe.)
  • Она самая умная из сестёр. (She is the smartest of the sisters.)
  • Москва — один из самых больших городов Европы. (Moscow is one of the biggest cities in Europe.)

In один из самых …, meaning "one of the most …", both самых and the noun are in the genitive plural.

Best of all: лучше всех, больше всего

For a verb or an adverb, use the simple comparative (see Comparative adjectives (быстрее, лучше, более быстрый)) + всех ("than everyone", for people) or всего ("than everything", for things and activities):

  • Он говорит быстрее всех. (He speaks the fastest of all.)
  • Она поёт лучше всех. (She sings best of all.)
  • Больше всего я люблю лето. (I like summer most of all.)
  • Лучше всего я сплю дома. (I sleep best at home.)

Formal and bookish forms

In formal writing, наиболее + adjective is also used (it does not change). Forms in -ейший (интереснейший, важнейший) can mean "very …" or "the most …" (старейший житель города); the context decides:

  • Это наиболее важный вопрос. (This is the most important question.)
  • Он интереснейший человек. (He is a most interesting person.)

Common mistakes

  • ❌ Это самый быстрее поезд. → ✅ Это самый быстрый поезд. (самый goes with the ordinary adjective, not with the comparative form)
  • ❌ Это самая большой город. → ✅ Это самый большой город. (both words agree with the noun in gender)
  • ❌ Он живёт в самый большой город. → ✅ Он живёт в самом большом городе. (где? asks for the prepositional, so both words change)
  • ❌ Это самая высокая гора из мире. → ✅ Это самая высокая гора в мире. (в + prepositional for a place; из needs the genitive plural of a group)
  • ❌ Она поёт самая лучше. → ✅ Она поёт лучше всех. (for the adverb, use the comparative + всех)

Key takeaways

  • The superlative is самый + the ordinary adjective; both words agree with the noun in gender, number and case (самая новая книга, в самом большом доме).
  • Лучший and худший mean "the best" and "the worst" and decline like ordinary adjectives; самый лучший adds emphasis in speech.
  • В + prepositional names the place (в классе, в мире), из + genitive plural names the set (из сестёр); один из самых + genitive plural means "one of the most".
  • Never put самый before the comparative form: ✅ самый быстрый, never ❌ самый быстрее.
  • For verbs and adverbs, use the comparative + всех (people) or всего (things): лучше всех, больше всего.
  • Наиболее + adjective and forms in -ейший belong mostly to formal and written Russian.
