Мне тридцать пять лет. Эта книга стоит двести пятьдесят рублей. В нашем доме сто двадцать квартир.I am thirty-five. This book costs two hundred and fifty roubles. There are a hundred and twenty flats in our building.
You already know the numbers up to twenty from Cardinal numbers 1–20. From 20 on, Russian builds numbers from a few new words: eight tens, nine hundreds and тысяча ("thousand"). Compound numbers are written as separate words, largest first, with no hyphen and no "and" (двадцать один, сто двадцать пять). The noun after a compound number depends on its last word, and the full rules are in Nouns after cardinal numbers in nominative/accusative phrases (1, 2–4, 5+).
In short: learn the tens (двадцать … девяносто) and the hundreds (сто … девятьсот), then add the smaller number after the larger one (сорок два, сто тридцать пять). Один and два at the end still agree with the noun's gender (двадцать одна книга, тридцать две сестры).
The tens: 20–90
| Number | Russian |
|---|---|
| 20 | двадцать |
| 30 | тридцать |
| 40 | сорок |
| 50 | пятьдесят |
| 60 | шестьдесят |
| 70 | семьдесят |
| 80 | восемьдесят |
| 90 | девяносто |
Двадцать and тридцать end in -дцать, and 50–80 end in -десят with a soft sign inside the word (пятьдесят, шестьдесят, семьдесят, восемьдесят). Сорок and девяносто are separate words that you learn on their own. The pattern of the numbers 5–9 does not carry over to 40 and 90: ✅ сорок, never ❌ четырьдесят, and ✅ девяносто, never ❌ девятьдесят.
The hundreds: 100–900
| Number | Russian |
|---|---|
| 100 | сто |
| 200 | двести |
| 300 | триста |
| 400 | четыреста |
| 500 | пятьсот |
| 600 | шестьсот |
| 700 | семьсот |
| 800 | восемьсот |
| 900 | девятьсот |
Сто is a single word. Двести, триста and четыреста look like 2, 3 and 4 plus a form of "hundred", and пятьсот … девятьсот look like 5–9 plus -сот. Note the soft sign in 500, 600, 700 and 800 (пятьсот, шестьсот, семьсот, восемьсот).
Building compound numbers
Say the largest part first and add the smaller parts after it, each as its own word. Russian has no word for "and" in them:
- двадцать один (21)
- тридцать пять (35)
- сто двенадцать (112)
- двести сорок пять (245)
- девятьсот девяносто девять (999)
The last word still follows gender when it is один or два: it is одна and две with feminine nouns and одно with neuter nouns, as in the numbers up to 20.
- двадцать один брат (twenty-one brothers)
- двадцать одна сестра (twenty-one sisters)
- двадцать одно окно (twenty-one windows)
- двадцать два брата (twenty-two brothers)
- двадцать две сестры (twenty-two sisters)
- двадцать два окна (twenty-two windows)
1000 and above
Тысяча ("thousand") is a feminine noun, so it changes like one: одна тысяча (or just тысяча), две тысячи for 2–4, and пять тысяч from 5 on. After an exact thousand, the noun is in the genitive plural. With a remainder, the final-word rule below applies (две тысячи одна книга, две тысячи три книги):
-
тысяча / одна тысяча (1000)
-
две тысячи (2000)
-
пять тысяч (5000)
-
две тысячи пятьсот (2500)
-
В библиотеке две тысячи книг. (There are two thousand books in the library.)
The noun after a compound number
The noun follows the last word of the number, with the same rules as for the numbers up to 20. The question word is сколько?. More examples are in Nouns after cardinal numbers in nominative/accusative phrases (1, 2–4, 5+):
| The number ends in | The noun is in | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| один (but not 11) | the nominative singular | двадцать один студент, сто одна книга, тридцать одно окно |
| два, три, четыре (but not 12–14) | the genitive singular | двадцать два студента, тридцать три книги, сорок четыре окна |
| 0, 5–9, 11–14 | the genitive plural | тридцать студентов, сто рублей, сто двенадцать книг |
For the noun forms год / года / лет (years of age) the same rule applies: двадцать один год, двадцать два года, двадцать пять лет, сто лет.
Using the numbers
- Сколько вам лет? — Мне сорок два года. (How old are you? — I am forty-two.)
- Мне тридцать один год. (I am thirty-one.)
- Эта книга стоит двести пятьдесят рублей. (This book costs two hundred and fifty roubles.)
- В классе двадцать три студента. (There are twenty-three students in the class.)
Common mistakes
- ❌ девятьдесят → ✅ девяносто (The word is not built like 5–9 plus -десят: 90 is девяносто)
- ❌ пятсот → ✅ пятьсот (500 has a soft sign in the middle: пятьсот)
- ❌ двадцать два студентов → ✅ двадцать два студента (The last word is два, so the noun is in the genitive singular)
- ❌ тридцать два книги → ✅ тридцать две книги (The noun is feminine, so две (not два) and the genitive singular)
- ❌ сто один рублей → ✅ сто один рубль (The last word is один, so the noun is in the nominative singular)
