All = cada miembro, afirmativo.

  • All students must register by Friday. (cada estudiante)
  • I've read all these books.
  • She speaks all three languages fluently.

All va directamente delante de un sustantivo plural (all students) o incontable (all information) — sin necesidad de of. Pero cuando el sustantivo va precedido de un determinante (the, my, these…) o cuando usas un pronombre (them, us), aparece of:

  • All the students passed. — no ❌ all of students
  • All of my friends live abroad.
  • All of them were late.
Seguido de Estructura Ejemplo
sustantivo plural/incontable simple all + sustantivo all students, all water
sustantivo con determinante all (of) + the/my/these/… + sustantivo all the students / all of the students
pronombre all of + them/us/… all of us

Delante de the, my, these y similares, of es opcional — ✅ all the students y ✅ all of the students son ambas formas estándar, tanto en inglés británico como americano, y significan lo mismo. Delante de un pronombre solo, of es obligatorio: ✅ all of them, nunca ❌ all them.

Al igual que both (ver el artículo enlazado arriba), all también puede separarse del sustantivo y colocarse junto al verbo — después del sujeto, después de be, o después del primer auxiliar/modal:

  • We all enjoyed the trip.
  • They are all ready.
  • We have all finished. / They can all come.
  • I've invited them all. / I've invited all of them. — ambas posiciones funcionan aquí.

La concordancia verbal sigue al sustantivo, no a la palabra all en sí: ✅ All the books are here (sustantivo plural → verbo plural), pero ✅ All the information is here (sustantivo incontable → verbo singular).

  • None of the students passed. (ni un solo estudiante)
  • None of us knew the answer.
  • "How many are left?" — "None."

  • No students passed. = None of the students passed.

No va directamente delante del sustantivo, sin of; none se usa solo, o con of + the/my/… + sustantivo/pronombre.

Tradicionalmente, none (= "ni uno") lleva verbo en singular: None of them is ready. Con un sustantivo incontable, solo es posible el singular: None of the information is useful (no ❌ are useful).

La trampa de precisión: not all frente a none

Compara:

  • Not all of the students passed.
  • None of the students passed. → nadie aprobó en absoluto (una negación total)

Ahora mira esta frase, que los estudiantes suelen construir añadiendo not al verbo principal en lugar de a all:

  • ⚠️ All of the students didn't pass.

  • Not all of the students passed. (claramente parcial)
  • None of the students passed. (claramente total)

La misma trampa aparece con both: ⚠️ Both of them didn't come puede entenderse como "no vino ninguno de los dos" o como "los dos no vinieron juntos" (quizá vino solo uno). Para un significado exacto, es mejor ser explícito: ✅ Neither of them came (no vino nadie) o ✅ Only one of them came.

dos bothBoth answers are correct. neitherNeither answer is correct.
tres o más allAll three answers are correct. noneNone of the three answers is correct.

  • Neither of the three answers is correct. → ✅ None of the three answers is correct.
  • You can choose either of the three colours. → ✅ You can choose any of the three colours.

Errores frecuentes

  • All of book are good. → ✅ All of the books are good.
  • None students came. → ✅ None of the students came. / ✅ No students came. (si sigue un sustantivo/pronombre, none necesita of; no va directamente delante del sustantivo)
  • Neither of the three books is mine. → ✅ None of the three books is mine. (neither es solo para exactamente dos)
  • ⚠️ All of them didn't call. (ambiguo) → ✅ Not all of them called. (algunos llamaron) o ✅ None of them called.

  1. ____ of the five candidates was on time. (Neither / None)
  2. I've checked all the reports and, honestly, ____ of them is/are perfect — every one has a small issue. (all / none)
  3. "How many messages are unread?" "____ — I read them all this morning." (None / All)
  4. You mean nobody passed, or just not everybody? Say it precisely: "____ of the students passed" for nobody, "____ of the students passed" for not everybody.
  5. ____ of the twins looks like their mother — they both take after their father. (Either / Neither)
Ver las respuestas
None…Not all (en ese orden)   5.

  • Not all/not both = una negación parcial (algunos, pero no todos); none/neither = una negación total (ninguno).
