形容詞の比較級

二つのものを並べて比べるとき——二台のスマホ、二つの街、二杯のコーヒー——比較級の形容詞が必要です：taller、cheaper、more expensive。英語の作り方は二通りで、どちらを使うかは形容詞の長さでほぼ決まります。

覚えるべき一つの規則。 短い形容詞 → -er をつける（old → older）。長い形容詞 → 前に more を置く（more useful）。両方を同時に使うことはほとんどありません——❌ more older が最もよくある間違いです。

二つをつなぐ語が than（「〜より」）です：Anna is taller than Ben.

日本語話者へ。 日本語は「A は B より + 形容詞」（例：「これはあれより高い」）で、形容詞の形は変わりません。英語では形容詞に -er をつけるか、前に more を置き、二つを than でつなぎます。

短い形容詞：-er をつける

ほとんどの1音節の形容詞は、語尾に -er をつけます：

• cheap → cheaper — This phone is cheaper than that one.
• old → older — My brother is older than me.
• fast → faster — The train is faster than the bus.

つづりには小さな4つのパターンがあります：

-y → -ier のパターンは -y で終わる2音節の形容詞の多くにも当てはまり、busy → busier、friendly → friendlier、pretty → prettier は2音節でも -er を取ります。

長い形容詞：more を使う

2音節以上の形容詞（上の -y のものを除く）は、語尾を変えず——前に more を置きます：

• expensive → more expensive — This restaurant is more expensive than the café.
• careful → more careful — She's more careful than I am.
• interesting → more interesting — The second book was more interesting than the first.
• beautiful → more beautiful — This view is more beautiful than the one from the hotel.

注意：形容詞そのものは変わりません——✅ more expensive、決して ❌ more expensiver ではありません。

than が二つをつなぐ

than（「〜より」）は、比べる二つのものの間に入ります：

A + 比較級 + than + B

• Today is warmer than yesterday.
• Tea is cheaper than coffee here.
• He's more relaxed than his sister.

than と then を混同しないこと。 見た目も音も似ていますが、働きはまったく違います。than は比較に使い（bigger than、better than）、then は時間・順序（「それから / その次に」）を表します（We had dinner, then we watched a film）。比較するときは必ず ❌ then → ✅ than。

きちんとした書き言葉では than I am / than she does を見かけます。でも話し言葉ではたいてい than me、than her、than him と言い、She's taller than me はごく自然です。このレベルではどちらでも構いません。

二つ目のものを挙げる必要がなければ、than は省けます：Could you speak more slowly? · I'd like a bigger one, please.

不規則な比較級

ごく一般的な形容詞のいくつかは、どちらの規則にも従いません——そのまま覚えましょう：

• This coffee is better than the one at home.
• My headache is worse today.
• The station is farther than I thought.

（far は特別で、比較級が二つあります。距離には farther と further のどちらも使えます：ten miles farther / further。「もっと / 追加の」の意味（further information）を持つのは further だけなので、一つだけ覚えるなら further を。）

much / a bit + 比較級

差がどれくらい大きいかを言うには、比較級の前に much・a lot・a bit のような語を置きます：

• This one is much cheaper. （大きな差）
• She's a bit taller than me. （小さな差）
• The new flat is a lot more expensive.

ここでも比較は重ねません：✅ much more expensive と ✅ much cheaper ——でも ❌ much more cheaper は決してダメです。far、a little、no、any、even を含む修飾語の一覧は比較級の修飾語にあります。

三つ以上を比べる——そして「同じ」と言う

このレッスンは二つのものを比べる話です。グループ全体からいちばんの一つを選ぶとき——the tallest、the most expensive——それは最上級で、別のレッスンになります。また、二つが同じだと言うには（as tall as）、のちほど as … as の構文を学びます。

よくある間違い

• ❌ She is more older than me. → ✅ She is older than me. （more と -er を一緒には使わない）
• ❌ This bag is more cheap. → ✅ This bag is cheaper. （短い形容詞は -er）
• ❌ Berlin is more big than Bonn. → ✅ Berlin is bigger than Bonn. （しかも g を重ねる）
• ❌ He runs faster that me. → ✅ He runs faster than me. （that ではなく than）
• ❌ She's taller then me. → ✅ She's taller than me. （than は比較、then は「それから / その次に」）
• ❌ My day was gooder. → ✅ My day was better. （good は不規則）
• ❌ This test was more easy. → ✅ This test was easier. （-y → -ier）

まとめ

• 比較級は二つのものを比べ、than がそれをつなぎます：A is bigger than B.
• 短い形容詞 → -er（cheaper、older）。長い形容詞 → more（more expensive）。両方は使わない。
• つづりに注意：nice → nicer、big → bigger、happy → happier（-y の語、例えば busy → busier は2音節でも -er）。
• 不規則形を覚える：good → better、bad → worse、far → farther / further。
• 差の大きさを示すには比較級の前に much / a bit を置く：much cheaper、a bit taller。
