The interrogative adjective quel in French: quel, quelle, quels, quelles

Quelle heure est-il ?What time is it?

When your question is about a specific noun — which book, what colour, which train — French uses quel. It's an adjective, so it agrees with that noun in gender and number.

Quick shortcut: use quel when the question is about a noun (Quel livre ?, Quelle est la question ?). Use qu'est-ce que or quoi when there's no noun at all (Qu'est-ce que tu lis ?).

The four forms

quel has the same four-way pattern as an ordinary adjective:

• Quel jour sommes-nous ? (masculine singular)
• Quelle est la question ? (feminine singular)
• Quels films tu aimes ? (masculine plural)
• Quelles langues parlez-vous ? (feminine plural)

In isolation — and before a consonant — all four are pronounced [kɛl], and the difference only shows in writing. Before a vowel, the plural adds an audible liaison: quels‿amis, quelles‿écoles.

Where quel goes

Right before its noun. The quel + noun block then sits where any question word sits:

• Tu veux quel dessert ? (at the end — casual, spoken)
• Quel dessert tu veux ? (fronted — also casual, spoken)
• Quel dessert est-ce que tu veux ? (neutral)
• Quel dessert veux-tu ? (formal)

Split from its noun by être: quel + être + noun. Here quel still agrees with that noun:

• Quelle est ta couleur préférée ? (agrees with couleur)
• Quels sont les horaires ? (agrees with horaires)

After a preposition: the preposition comes first, then quel + noun:

• À quelle heure ? — Dans quel pays ? — De quelle ville viens-tu ? — Pour quelle raison ?

quel vs qu'est-ce que / quoi

The choice is simple: is there a noun?

• Noun → quel: Quelle musique tu écoutes ?
• No noun → qu'est-ce que / quoi: Qu'est-ce que tu écoutes ? / Tu écoutes quoi ?

So Quel est-ce que tu veux ? is wrong (no noun after quel) — say Qu'est-ce que tu veux ? To point at one item out of several without repeating the noun, French uses lequel, which comes later.

Everyday quel phrases

• Quel âge as-tu ? (How old are you?)
• Quelle heure est-il ?
• Quel temps fait-il ?
• Quel jour est-ce qu'on est ?
• C'est quel numéro ?

The same word also makes exclamations — quel + noun + !, with no verb: Quel dommage ! (What a pity!) Quelle bonne idée ! Quels beaux enfants !

Common mistakes

• ❌ Quel heure est-il ? → ✅ Quelle heure est-il ? (heure is feminine)
• ❌ Quelle livre tu lis ? → ✅ Quel livre tu lis ? (livre is masculine)
• ❌ Quel sont tes films préférés ? → ✅ Quels sont tes films préférés ? (agrees even across être)
• ❌ Qu'est-ce que couleur tu préfères ? → ✅ Quelle couleur préfères-tu ? / Tu préfères quelle couleur ?
• ❌ Quel est-ce que tu veux ? → ✅ Qu'est-ce que tu veux ? (no noun → not quel)
