Le chat est sous la table. The cat is under the table.
To say where something or someone is, French puts a preposition of place before the noun: sur la table, dans la boîte, devant la maison. Most match their English equivalent closely, with two things to watch: some are a single word, others end in de and merge with le / les.
Quick shortcut: single-word prepositions (dans, sur, sous, devant, derrière, entre, chez) take the noun directly. Prepositions ending in de merge a following le into du and les into des (à côté du parc, en face des magasins).
Single-word prepositions
These sit straight in front of the noun and its article:
| Preposition | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| dans | in, inside | dans la voiture |
| sur | on | sur le lit |
| sous | under | sous le pont |
| devant | in front of | devant l'école |
| derrière | behind | derrière la porte |
| entre | between | entre les deux maisons |
| chez | at the home / place of | chez moi |
They often come in pairs: sur / sous, devant / derrière.
- Les clés sont dans mon sac.
- Le chien dort devant le feu.
- La pharmacie est entre la banque et la poste.
Prepositions built with de
Several common ones are two or three words ending in de:
- près de (near)
- loin de (far from)
- à côté de (next to)
- en face de (opposite, facing)
- au-dessus de (above)
- au-dessous de (below)
- autour de (around)
The de behaves like any other de: it stays de before la or l', but merges with le into du and with les into des.
| Combination | Result |
|---|---|
| à côté de + le parc | à côté du parc |
| en face de + les magasins | en face des magasins |
| près de + la gare | près de la gare |
| loin de + **l'**aéroport | *loin **de l'*aéroport |
- J'habite près du centre.
- La boulangerie est en face de la mairie.
- *Il y a un jardin **autour de l'*église.
This de + le → du / de + les → des merge is the same one covered in Contractions with à and de.
à for a town or a place
à marks the place where someone or something is, or is heading:
- Je suis à Paris.
- On mange à la maison.
- Elle travaille à l'hôpital.
Like de, à merges with le and les: à + le → au, à + les → aux (au bureau, aux toilettes). The full set of these contractions is in Contractions with à and de.
For a country (en France, au Japon) French picks the preposition by the country's gender and number — that is covered in a separate article, Prepositions with countries and cities.
chez — at someone's place
chez means at or to the home, office or shop of a person. It is followed by a person, a stressed pronoun or a name, never by la maison:
-
chez moi, chez toi, chez nous
-
chez le médecin, chez le coiffeur
-
chez Marie, chez mes parents
-
✅ Je rentre chez moi, never ❌ Je rentre à ma maison.
-
✅ Rendez-vous chez le dentiste.
Common mistakes
