Di solito mangio a casa, ma a volte vado al ristorante con gli amici.I usually eat at home, but sometimes I go to a restaurant with friends.

To say how often something happens, Italian uses adverbs of frequency such as sempre (always), spesso (often) and mai (never). They are short words that don't change, and in the present tense they usually go right after the verb.

Quick shortcut: sempre → di solito → spesso → a volte → raramente → mai, from "all the time" to "not at all". With the verb: Studio spesso la sera. With mai after the verb, add non in front: Non studio mai la sera.

The main adverbs

Italian Meaning Example
sempre always Maria beve sempre il tè. (Maria always drinks tea.)
di solito (also normalmente) usually Di solito esco alle otto. (I usually leave at eight.)
spesso often Vado spesso al cinema. (I often go to the cinema.)
a volte (also qualche volta, ogni tanto) sometimes A volte mangiamo fuori. (Sometimes we eat out.)
raramente (also di rado) rarely Guardo raramente la TV. (I rarely watch TV.)
mai never Non fumo mai. (I never smoke.)

A volte, qualche volta and ogni tanto are close in meaning. Ogni tanto often suggests "now and then", with longer gaps.

Where to put them

In a present-tense sentence, the adverb usually goes after the verb:

  • Mangio sempre a casa. (I always eat at home.)
  • Parlo spesso con Anna. (I often talk to Anna.)
  • Siamo raramente stanchi. (We are rarely tired.)

With essere the adverb also goes after the verb, before the rest: Marco è sempre in ritardo. (Marco is always late.)

In the compound tenses you will meet later, short adverbs like sempre and mai usually sit between the auxiliary and the participle: Ho sempre mangiato a casa. Non ho mai fumato.

Longer phrases like di solito, a volte and ogni tanto are flexible. They can open the sentence or come at the end:

  • A volte vado a piedi. / Vado a piedi a volte. (Sometimes I walk.)
  • Di solito leggo la sera. / Leggo la sera, di solito. (I usually read in the evening.)

mai goes with non

Mai means "never", but after the verb it needs non in front of the verb, just like the negative words in Negation with non:

  • Non mangio mai carne. (I never eat meat.)
  • Marco non è mai a casa. (Marco is never at home.)

On its own, mai can answer a question without non: Vai spesso al mare? — Mai. (Do you often go to the sea? — Never.)

Asking how often

To ask how often, use quanto spesso or ogni quanto:

  • Quanto spesso vai in palestra? (How often do you go to the gym?)
  • Vado in palestra due volte alla settimana. (I go to the gym twice a week.)

For exact frequency, use ogni or volte with a time word:

  • ogni giorno / tutti i giorni (every day)
  • ogni settimana (every week)
  • una volta al mese (once a month)
  • due volte alla settimana (twice a week)

Common mistakes

  • ❌ Mangio mai carne. → ✅ Non mangio mai carne. (mai after the verb needs non)
  • ❌ Io mai non mangio carne. → ✅ Non mangio mai carne.
  • ❌ Non mangio sempre carne. when you mean "I never eat meat" → ✅ Non mangio mai carne. (non … sempre means "not always")
  • ❌ Ogni giorni studio. → ✅ Ogni giorno studio. (ogni is followed by the singular)
