Anna è la più alta della classe.Anna is the tallest in the class.
The relative superlative picks one person or thing out of a group. It is built with the definite article + più (most) or meno (least) + the adjective, and the article agrees with the noun in gender and number.
Quick shortcut: il / la / i / le + più / meno + adjective, then the group with di or tra / fra: il più alto dei miei amici, la meno cara tra tutte.
1. The pattern
The article changes with the person or thing, and the adjective agrees as usual:
| Most | Least | |
|---|---|---|
| masculine singular | il più alto | il meno alto |
| feminine singular | la più alta | la meno alta |
| masculine plural | i più alti | i meno alti |
| feminine plural | le più alte | le meno alte |
- Marco è il più simpatico dei miei amici. (Marco is the nicest of my friends.)
- Queste sono le scarpe meno care del negozio. (These are the least expensive shoes in the shop.)
The comparative compares two (Marco è più alto di Luca). The superlative picks one out of a group (Marco è il più alto della classe). For the comparative, see Comparatives.
2. Naming the group
The group is introduced by di (which contracts with the article: del, della, dei, delle) or by tra / fra:
- Roma è la città più grande d'Italia. (of Italy)
- Anna è la più brava della classe.
- Chi è il più alto tra i tuoi fratelli? (among your brothers)
- Questo è il più economico di tutti. (the cheapest of all)
With a place, in is also common: È il ristorante più caro in città.
3. With a noun
When the noun comes right before più / meno, its own article does the job and no second article is added: la città più bella, il libro più interessante, le scarpe meno care. After a possessive the article is already there: il mio amico più caro (my dearest friend). With no noun at all, the article stands before più alone: il più caro, la più bella.
4. Adverbs
When an adverb is ranked against a group, Italian normally uses più / meno + adverb + di with no article. The group comes after di: Anna parla più chiaramente di tutti. Marco corre meno velocemente di tutti. The fixed pattern "as ... as possible" is an exception and does take an article: il più velocemente possibile.
5. What comes next
A clause with che can follow the superlative (il film più bello che abbia mai visto); its verb often takes the subjunctive, which comes later. For now, you can end the sentence after the group (il film più bello dell'anno).
To intensify an adjective without comparing it to anything, see Absolute superlative. For migliore, peggiore, maggiore, minore, see Irregular comparatives and superlatives.
