The book is on the table.

In breve: una cosa sola → there is (there's). Più di una cosa → there are.

There is / there are: le forme di base

Il verbo concorda con ciò che segue — singolare o plurale:

Forma Esempio
Singolare / non numerabile there is (there's) There's a cat in the garden.
Plurale there are There are three chairs here.

La differenza più insidiosa riguarda invece le domande: in italiano basta cambiare l'intonazione (C'è un bagno qui?), senza spostare nulla nella frase, mentre in inglese is/are deve spostarsi davanti a there: Is there a bathroom here?

  • There's a good restaurant near my house.
  • There are two windows in this room.
  • There's some milk in the fridge. (non numerabile — vedi sotto)

Nel parlato e nella scrittura informale, there is si contrae spesso in there's: There's a park nearby. Anche la forma completa There is a park nearby è corretta — suona solo un po' più curata o formale. There are di solito resta per esteso, anche nel parlato.

Scegliere a / an o un nome plurale

Poiché there is/are introduce di solito un'informazione nuova o non ancora menzionata, è tipicamente seguito da un articolo indeterminativo (a, an) con un nome singolare, oppure da un nome plurale senza alcun articolo:

  • There's a book on the table. = informazione nuova. Confronta: The book is on the table — usato quando chi parla e chi ascolta sanno già di quale libro si tratta.
  • There are apples in the bowl.
  • There's an umbrella by the door.

Con i nomi non numerabili si usa there is seguito dal nome, spesso con some o any: There's some water in the bottle. / Is there any coffee?

Domande: Is there...? / Are there...?

Per chiedere se qualcosa esiste, is o are si sposta semplicemente davanti a there — non serve do/does, perché there is/are ha già il proprio verbo:

  • Is there a bathroom here? — mai ❌ Does there a bathroom here?
  • Are there any shops nearby?
  • Is there a problem?
  • Are there enough chairs for everyone?

Le risposte brevi seguono lo stesso modello di be:

  • Is there a pool? — Yes, there is. / No, there isn't.
  • Are there any seats left? — Yes, there are. / No, there aren't.

Negazioni: isn't / aren't

not si mette subito dopo is o are, di solito contratto:

  • There isn't a mirror in this room. — mai ❌ There no is a mirror.
  • There aren't any messages for you.
  • There isn't any sugar left.
  • There aren't many people here today.

Si può anche usare no subito dopo is/are, al posto di isn't/aren't any — entrambe le forme significano la stessa cosa:

  • There is no sugar left. = There isn't any sugar left.
  • There are no messages for you. = There aren't any messages for you.

Some e any

Con il plurale e i nomi non numerabili, there is/are si combina spesso con some e any, seguendo il modello abituale: some nelle frasi affermative, any nelle domande e nelle negazioni.

  • There are some books on the shelf. (affermativa) — Are there any books on the shelf? (domanda) — There aren't any books on the shelf. (negativa)
  • There's some milk in the fridge. (affermativa) — Is there any milk in the fridge? (domanda) — There isn't any milk in the fridge. (negativa)

Dire dove si trova qualcosa

There is/are è spesso seguito da un'espressione che dice esattamente dove si trova qualcosa — di solito costruita con preposizioni di luogo come in, on, at, under o next to (un argomento a parte, in arrivo):

  • There's a lamp on the desk.
  • There are two dogs under the table.
  • There's a supermarket next to the station.

Errori comuni

  • It is a book on the table. → ✅ There's a book on the table. (per un'informazione nuova si usa there, non it)
  • There have three students in the class. → ✅ There are three students in the class. (con there si usa be, non have)
  • There is two cats in the yard. → ✅ There are two cats in the yard. (un nome plurale richiede are, non is)
  • Does there a bank near here? → ✅ Is there a bank near here? (niente do/does con there is/are)
  • There no is a clock on the wall. → ✅ There isn't a clock on the wall. (la negazione è isn't, non no is)
  • There's many problems. → ✅ There are many problems. (there's solo per singolare/non numerabile)

Da ricordare

  • There is (there's) introduce una cosa sola o una quantità non numerabile; there are ne introduce più di una.
  • Le domande invertono l'ordine della frase: Is there...? / Are there...? — non serve do/does.
  • Le negazioni sono There isn't... e There aren't... (oppure there is/are no...).
  • There is/are si combina di solito con a/an, un nome plurale o some/any, perché introduce tipicamente un'informazione nuova — per qualcosa che entrambi già conoscono si usa l'ordine normale della frase: The book is on the table.
