The book is on the table.
Resumindo: uma coisa → there is (there's). Mais de uma coisa → there are.
There is / there are: as formas básicas
O verbo concorda com o que vem depois — singular ou plural:
| Forma | Exemplo | |
|---|---|---|
| Singular / incontável | there is (there's) | There's a cat in the garden. |
| Plural | there are | There are three chairs here. |
- There's a good restaurant near my house.
- There are two windows in this room.
- There's some milk in the fridge. (incontável — veja abaixo)
Na fala e na escrita informal, there is costuma se contrair em there's: There's a park nearby. A forma completa There is a park nearby também é correta — só soa um pouco mais cuidada ou formal. There are normalmente permanece sem contração, mesmo na fala.
Escolher a / an ou um substantivo no plural
Como there is/are costuma introduzir informação nova ou ainda não mencionada, geralmente vem seguido de um artigo indefinido (a, an) com um substantivo no singular, ou de um substantivo no plural sem nenhum artigo:
- There's a book on the table. = informação nova. Compare: The book is on the table — usado quando quem fala e quem ouve já sabem de qual livro se trata.
- There are apples in the bowl.
- There's an umbrella by the door.
Com substantivos incontáveis, usa-se there is seguido do substantivo, muitas vezes com some ou any: There's some water in the bottle. / Is there any coffee?
Perguntas: Is there...? / Are there...?
Para perguntar se algo existe, is ou are simplesmente se move para antes de there — não precisa de do/does, porque there is/are já tem seu próprio verbo:
- ✅ Is there a bathroom here? — nunca ❌ Does there a bathroom here?
- ✅ Are there any shops nearby?
- Is there a problem?
- Are there enough chairs for everyone?
As respostas curtas seguem o mesmo padrão de be:
- Is there a pool? — Yes, there is. / No, there isn't.
- Are there any seats left? — Yes, there are. / No, there aren't.
Negativas: isn't / aren't
not vai logo depois de is ou are, geralmente contraído:
- ✅ There isn't a mirror in this room. — nunca ❌ There no is a mirror.
- ✅ There aren't any messages for you.
- There isn't any sugar left.
- There aren't many people here today.
Também é possível usar no logo depois de is/are, em vez de isn't/aren't any — ambas as formas significam a mesma coisa:
- There is no sugar left. = There isn't any sugar left.
- There are no messages for you. = There aren't any messages for you.
Some e any
Com substantivos no plural e substantivos incontáveis, there is/are costuma se combinar com some e any, seguindo o padrão de sempre: some em frases afirmativas, any em perguntas e negativas.
- There are some books on the shelf. (afirmativa) — Are there any books on the shelf? (pergunta) — There aren't any books on the shelf. (negativa)
- There's some milk in the fridge. (afirmativa) — Is there any milk in the fridge? (pergunta) — There isn't any milk in the fridge. (negativa)
Dizer onde algo está
There is/are costuma vir seguido de uma expressão que diz exatamente onde algo está — geralmente formada com preposições de lugar como in, on, at, under ou next to (um tópico à parte, em breve disponível):
- There's a lamp on the desk.
- There are two dogs under the table.
- There's a supermarket next to the station.
Erros comuns
- ❌ It is a book on the table. → ✅ There's a book on the table. (para informação nova usa-se there, não it)
- ❌ There have three students in the class. → ✅ There are three students in the class. (com there usa-se be, não have)
- ❌ There is two cats in the yard. → ✅ There are two cats in the yard. (substantivo no plural precisa de are, não is)
- ❌ Does there a bank near here? → ✅ Is there a bank near here? (sem do/does com there is/are)
- ❌ There no is a clock on the wall. → ✅ There isn't a clock on the wall. (a negativa é isn't, não no is)
- ❌ There's many problems. → ✅ There are many problems. (there's só para singular/incontável)
