何かが存在する、あるいはどこかにあることを言いたいとき、英語ではよく there is と there are という特別な形を使います。これは場所を指して「あそこ」と言っているのではなく、会話に新しい情報を導入する表現です。すでにお互いが知っているものについて話すときは、通常の語順を使います。The book is on the table.

基本ルール： ものが1つ → there is（there's）。ものが2つ以上 → there are。

There is / there are：基本の形

後ろに続く名詞が単数・不可算か、複数かによって、動詞の形が変わります。

形 例文
単数・不可算名詞（数えられない名詞） there is（there's） There's a cat in the garden.
複数 there are There are three chairs here.

標準的な英語では、複数名詞の前には必ず there are を使います。とてもくだけた話し言葉では複数名詞の前でも there's が聞かれることがありますが、丁寧な英語では避けたほうがよいでしょう。

日本語では「あります／います」を、生き物かどうかで使い分けます。一方、英語の there is / there are は生き物かどうかではなく、数が1つか複数かで is / are を選びます。

  • There's a good restaurant near my house.
  • There are two windows in this room.
  • There's some milk in the fridge.（数えられない名詞 — 下記参照）

話し言葉やくだけた文章では、there is はよく there's に短縮されます。There's a park nearby. 省略しない形の There is a park nearby も正しい英語で、少しきちんとした響きになるだけです。there are は話し言葉でも短縮されずに使われるのが普通です。

a / an と複数名詞の使い分け

there is/are はたいてい新しい情報、まだ話に出ていない情報を導入するので、単数名詞なら不定冠詞（a、an）を付け、複数名詞なら冠詞を付けずに使うのが典型的です。

  • There's a book on the table. ＝新しい情報。比較：The book is on the table（話し手と聞き手の両方が、どの本のことか既に知っている場合に使う）。
  • There are apples in the bowl.
  • There's an umbrella by the door.

数えられない名詞には、there is の後にその名詞を続けます。some や any を伴うこともよくあります。There's some water in the bottle. / Is there any coffee?

疑問文：Is there...? / Are there...?

何かが存在するかどうかを尋ねるときは、is または are を there の前に移動させるだけです。there is/are にはすでに be 動詞が入っているので、do/does は不要です。

  • ✅ Is there a bathroom here? — ❌ Does there a bathroom here? は誤り
  • ✅ Are there any shops nearby?
  • Is there a problem?
  • Are there enough chairs for everyone?

短い答え方は be 動詞のときと同じパターンです。

  • Is there a pool? — Yes, there is. / No, there isn't.
  • Are there any seats left? — Yes, there are. / No, there aren't.

否定文：isn't / aren't

not は is または are のすぐ後ろに置き、たいてい短縮形になります。

  • ✅ There isn't a mirror in this room. — ❌ There no is a mirror. は誤り
  • ✅ There aren't any messages for you.
  • There isn't any sugar left.
  • There aren't many people here today.

isn't/aren't any の代わりに、is/are のすぐ後ろに no を使うこともできます。どちらも同じ意味になります。

  • There is no sugar left. ＝ There isn't any sugar left.
  • There are no messages for you. ＝ There aren't any messages for you.

some と any

複数名詞や数えられない名詞では、there is/are は some や any とよく組み合わせて使われます。基本の使い分けは、肯定文では some、疑問文と否定文では any です。

  • There are some books on the shelf.（肯定文）— Are there any books on the shelf?（疑問文）— There aren't any books on the shelf.（否定文）
  • There's some milk in the fridge.（肯定文）— Is there any milk in the fridge?（疑問文）— There isn't any milk in the fridge.（否定文）

場所を言う

there is/are の後には、ものや人がどこにある・いるのかを示す表現が続くことがよくあります。たいてい in、on、at、under、next to などの場所を表す前置詞を使います（これは別トピックで扱います。近日公開予定です）。

  • There's a lamp on the desk.
  • There are two dogs under the table.
  • There's a supermarket next to the station.

よくある間違い

  • ❌ It is a book on the table. → ✅ There's a book on the table.（新しい情報には it ではなく there を使う）
  • ❌ There have three students in the class. → ✅ There are three students in the class.（there には have ではなく be を使う）
  • ❌ There is two cats in the yard. → ✅ There are two cats in the yard.（複数名詞には is ではなく are が必要）
  • ❌ Does there a bank near here? → ✅ Is there a bank near here?（there is/are には do/does は不要）
  • ❌ There no is a clock on the wall. → ✅ There isn't a clock on the wall.（否定文は no is ではなく isn't）
  • ❌ There's many problems. → ✅ There are many problems.（there's は単数・数えられない名詞にだけ使う）
