taller や more expensive のような比較級は、二つのものが違うことを表します。では、二つが同じ場合はどうでしょうか。英語にはそのための専用の構文があります。as … as です。
覚えるべき一つの規則。 二つのものが等しいと言うには、形容詞や副詞の原級を二つの as で挟みます。as + 形容詞・副詞の原級 + as。-er も more もつけません。原級のままです。✅ as tall as、❌ as taller as とは決して言いません。
同等の比較：as … as
二つのものが何かの点で等しいときは、as + 形容詞 + as を使います。
- My brother is as tall as me.
- This café is as good as the one downtown.
- Her new phone is as fast as mine.
形容詞は原級のままです。比較級にはしません。✅ as expensive as、❌ as more expensive as とは決して言いません。
日本語の「〜と同じくらい」は語順が柔軟ですが、英語では as + 形容詞・副詞の原級 + as の語順を崩せません。特に、比較級にして as taller as としない点に注意しましょう。
同じパターンは形容詞だけでなく副詞にも使えます。She finished as quickly as she could. · He didn't drive as carefully as usual.
このレッスンでは形容詞と副詞を扱います。数量については別のパターンがあり、ここでは扱いません。as much time as、as many books as のような形です。
否定形：not as / so … as
二つのものが同じでないと言うには、最初の as の前に not を置きます。最初の as を so に置き換えることもできます。どちらも正しい形ですが、not so … as のほうが少し古風・フォーマルに聞こえます。
- This test wasn't as hard as the last one.
- He isn't as busy as he used to be.
- The film wasn't so exciting as I expected.（as … as より少しフォーマル）
この否定形が実際に何を意味するかに注意しましょう。not as hard as は、一つ目が二つ目ほど難しくないと言っているだけで、どれくらい差があるかは示していません。差の大きさを表すには、次に紹介する修飾語が必要です。
比較のニュアンスを弱めたり強めたりする
最初の as の前に語を置くと、二つのものの差がどのくらい小さいかを表せます。

- This laptop is just as fast as the old one — they feel equally fast.
- He isn't nearly as tired as he looks は、大きな差を強調する言い方です。単なる isn't as tired as は、彼のほうが疲れていないと言っているだけで、その差の大きさは示していません。
差を数値化する：twice as、half as、three times as
大きさ・速さ・値段などが何倍にあたるかを正確に言うには、as … as の前に倍数を置きます。
- This flat is twice as expensive as my old one.（2倍）
- The queue moved half as fast as yesterday.（半分）
- Their new office is three times as big as the old one.（3倍）
このレベルで自然な英語にするには、倍数 + as + 形容詞 + as の形を使います。twice as big as のようにです。より上級・専門的な英語では three times bigger than のような形も見かけますが、あいまいに聞こえることがあるため、このレッスンではより明確な as … as の形を使います。✅ twice as big as。このレベルでは ❌ twice bigger than は避けましょう。
as … as と -er / more の違い
どちらの構文も二つのものを比べますが、焦点になる問いが違います。

-er / more の比較級も、差の大きさを示すために弱めたり強めたりできます。a bit bigger、much more expensive、far cheaper のようにです。これは別のテーマで、独自の修飾語があります。as … as に慣れてから学ぶとよいでしょう。
as のあとの代名詞について。 日常会話では目的格の代名詞がごく自然です。as tall as me、as good as her。よりフォーマルな文章では、主格の代名詞に動詞を続ける形も見られます。as tall as I am、as good as she is。どちらも正しい形で、目的格のほうがくだけた響きになります。

- ❌ She is as taller as me. → ✅ She is as tall as me.（原級を使う。比較級は使わない）
- ❌ This is as more expensive as that. → ✅ This is as expensive as that.
- ❌ It's twice bigger than the old one. → ✅ It's twice as big as the old one.（このレベルでは倍数は as … as と組み合わせる）
- ❌ He isn't so good than her. → ✅ He isn't as good as her / ✅ He isn't so good as her.（as … as か so … as。so … than は決して使わない）
- ❌ This bag is not as cheap than that one. → ✅ This bag is not as cheap as that one.
