ohne … zu means "without doing something"; (an)statt … zu means "instead of doing something". Both pack a whole clause into a short zu-infinitive phrase. This works when the phrase's understood subject is the same as the main clause's subject, and it is the normal, concise choice there. When the subjects differ, the zu-infinitive is not available and German uses a full clause with ohne dass or (an)statt dass instead.
These join um … zu ("in order to") as the three infinitive conjunctions; the basic zu-infinitive is covered in Infinitive clauses with zu.
Quick shortcut: same subject → ohne / (an)statt + … + zu + Infinitiv at the end (ohne zu fragen, statt zu arbeiten) — the concise default. Different subjects → ohne dass / (an)statt dass + a normal verb-final clause (the only option there). The infinitive group is always set off from the main clause by a comma. For "without …-ing anything" use ohne etwas zu …, not ohne nichts zu ….
ohne … zu
ohne stands first, the phrase closes with zu + infinitive, and anything else (objects, adverbs) sits in between:
- Er ging weg, ohne sich zu verabschieden. (…without saying goodbye)
- Sie unterschrieb den Vertrag, ohne ihn gelesen zu haben. (…without having read it — perfect infinitive)
- Man kann nicht Deutsch lernen, ohne Fehler zu machen.
For "without saying anything", use ✅ Er ging, ohne etwas zu sagen — not the non-standard ❌ ohne nichts zu sagen.
(an)statt … zu
statt and anstatt are interchangeable (anstatt is a little more formal); both work exactly like ohne … zu:
- Statt zu antworten, zuckte sie mit den Schultern. (Instead of answering, she shrugged.)
- Er sah fern, anstatt für die Prüfung zu lernen.
Don't confuse this statt with the preposition anstelle (+ genitive), which takes a noun, not a zu-infinitive: anstelle eines Anrufs but anstatt anzurufen.
When the subjects differ: ohne dass / (an)statt dass
The infinitive phrase has no subject of its own — it borrows the main clause's. If the "without" or "instead" action belongs to someone else, the infinitive can't be used; you need a full subordinate clause with dass and a finite verb at the end:
| Same subject (infinitive preferred) | Different subjects (dass-clause required) | |
|---|---|---|
| without | Sie ging, ohne sich zu verabschieden. | Sie ging, ohne dass es jemand bemerkte. |
| instead of | Er blieb, statt mitzukommen. | Er blieb, statt dass die anderen ihm halfen. |
| in order to | Ich rief an, um zu helfen. | Ich rief an, damit er sich nicht sorgt. |
So ✅ Sie reiste ab, ohne dass die Kinder Bescheid wussten — never ❌ …, ohne die Kinder Bescheid zu wissen (the knowing is the children's, not hers).
ohne dass and (an)statt dass are also grammatical when the subject is shared (Er ging, ohne dass er sich verabschiedete) — just longer than the infinitive, which is why the infinitive is the usual choice.
Where zu goes
- Separable verb: zu slips between the prefix and the stem — ohne aufzustehen, statt mitzukommen, ohne zurückzurufen.
- Perfect infinitive (a completed action): Partizip II + zu haben / zu sein — ohne es bemerkt zu haben, statt früher gekommen zu sein.
- Modal verb: ohne helfen zu können, statt warten zu müssen.
Comma and position
A comma always separates the infinitive group from the main clause — this is one of the cases where the comma is not optional:
- ✅ Er ging*,** ohne sich zu verabschieden.* — never ❌ Er ging ohne sich zu verabschieden.
The group can come after the main clause or in front of it:
- Sie sagte zu, ohne zu zögern.
- Ohne zu zögern, sagte sie zu. (fronted — the main clause then starts with the verb)
Common mistakes
- ❌ Sie reiste ab, ohne die Nachbarn Bescheid zu wissen. → ✅ …, ohne dass die Nachbarn Bescheid wussten. (different subject → ohne dass)
- ❌ Er ging weg, ohne zu sagen nichts. → ✅ Er ging weg, ohne etwas zu sagen. (ohne etwas zu …, not ohne nichts zu …; zu-infinitive comes last)
- ❌ Sie verließ den Raum, ohne umzudrehen sich. → ✅ …, ohne sich umzudrehen. (zu inside the separable verb; reflexive pronoun before it)
- ❌ Statt er arbeitet, schläft er. → ✅ Statt zu arbeiten, schläft er. (statt can't head a bare finite clause — use statt zu + infinitive, or statt dass + a full clause)
- ❌ Er kam, ohne einzuladen zu sein. → ✅ Er kam, ohne eingeladen zu sein. (passive infinitive: Partizip II + zu sein)
- ❌ Er ging ohne sich zu verabschieden. → ✅ Er ging*,** ohne sich zu verabschieden.* (comma required)
