Sales fell; consequently, the company reduced its staff.

You already know the everyday linkers for cause and consequence and for contrast. Reports, essays, news articles and formal emails use a wider set. This article groups them by job: results, contrast, adding and concluding.

Quick shortcut: a linking adverb at the start of a sentence is followed by a comma (Por consiguiente, …), and after a semicolon it works the same way (…; no obstante, …). Conjunctions that open a clause, such as si bien, dado que and de modo que, take no comma right after them. Check the mood too: de modo que takes the indicative for a result and the subjunctive for a purpose, de ahí que is usually followed by the subjunctive, and si bien by the indicative.

To say what follows from something, formal Spanish has several options:

(as a result)
(hence, very formal and written)
(so, with the indicative for a real result)
(hence, usually followed by the subjunctive)

De modo que and de manera que also work for a purpose, and then they take the subjunctive: Habló despacio de modo que todos lo entendieran. (He spoke slowly so that everyone would understand.) For reasons, formal Spanish uses dado que, puesto que and en vista de que, normally with the indicative when the reason is presented as a fact: Dado que es tarde, nos vamos.

For contrast, formal writing offers a wider set than pero and sin embargo:

(nevertheless)
  • Hubo problemas. Con todo, el balance es positivo. (all the same)
  • Estaba cansada; aun así, decidió seguir. (even so)
(although, with the indicative)
(that said, introducing a qualification)

To compare two things, use en cambio: Los jóvenes votaron en masa; en cambio, los mayores se abstuvieron. To reject what was just said and put the opposite in its place, use por el contrario: No fue un éxito; por el contrario, fue un fracaso total.

Adding: además, asimismo, es más

To add information, Spanish uses además (in addition), asimismo (likewise, more formal) and es más (what is more, to reinforce):

They usually come at the start of the last sentence or paragraph.

Common mistakes

  • ❌ Si bien llegó tarde, pero se disculpó. → ✅ Si bien llegó tarde, se disculpó. (si bien already marks the concession, so pero is not added.)
  • ❌ No obstante de la lluvia, salimos. → ✅ No obstante la lluvia, salimos. / A pesar de la lluvia, salimos. (no obstante is not followed by de. Before a noun it is formal and written, and a pesar de is the more usual choice.)
  • ❌ Dado que sea tarde, nos vamos. → ✅ Dado que es tarde, nos vamos. (dado que gives a reason that is already known, so it normally takes the indicative.)
