I tempi continuous aggiungono being: is being built. I tempi perfect aggiungono been: has been built. Il passivo modale semplice usa la forma base be: must be built. Il passivo modale perfetto usa have been: could have been broken.
| Tempo | Forma attiva | Forma passiva |
|---|---|---|
| Present simple | They build houses here. | Houses are built here. |
| Present continuous | They are building a house. | A house is being built. |
| Present perfect | They have built the house. | The house has been built. |
| Past simple | They built the house. | The house was built. |
| Past continuous | They were building the house. | The house was being built. |
| Past perfect | They had built the house before we arrived. | The house had been built before we arrived. |
| Futuro (will) | They will build a house. | A house will be built. |
| Future perfect | They will have built the house by June. | The house will have been built by June. |
| Going to | They are going to build a house. | A house is going to be built. |
| Modale | They must build it safely. | It must be built safely. |
(Alcune forme passive — perfect continuous come has been being repaired, o future continuous come will be being repaired — esistono tecnicamente, ma suonano così pesanti che quasi sempre si preferisce riformulare la frase. Qui sono lasciate volutamente da parte.)
I tempi continuous: presente e passato
Present continuous passivo: am / is / are + being + participio passato.
- The road is being repaired this week.
- Our order is being prepared.
- These issues are being investigated.
Past continuous passivo: was / were + being + participio passato.
- The house was being painted when the storm hit.
- New rules were being discussed at the time.
In inglese, invece, se vuoi dire che l'azione è in corso, serve being: is being built. Senza being — is built — parli di un fatto generale, di una routine o di una caratteristica.
✅ is being built (present continuous passivo) è una frase diversa da ✅ is built (present simple passivo) — il being segnala un'azione in corso adesso o in un periodo attuale temporaneo, non un fatto generale o un'abitudine ripetuta: ❌ This bridge is being built every year non ha senso, perché "every year" richiede la forma semplice: ✅ This bridge is inspected every year.
I tempi perfect: presente e passato
Present perfect passivo: have / has + been + participio passato.
- The report has been finished.
- All the documents have been signed.
- Has the package been delivered yet?
Past perfect passivo: had + been + participio passato.
- The guests had already been seated when the band arrived.
- The building had been demolished before anyone could stop it.
Nota lo schema: have/has/had/will have + been + participio passato. L'ausiliare del perfect (have, has, had) si combina con il participio passato di be, cioè been — e dopo been viene il participio passato del verbo principale (built, signed, delivered).
Il futuro: will, future perfect e going to
Future simple passivo: will + be + participio passato.
- The results will be announced tomorrow.
- A decision will be made by Friday.
Future perfect passivo: will have + been + participio passato — per un'azione che sarà completata prima di un momento preciso nel futuro.
- The renovation will have been finished by the time you visit.
- All the seats will have been sold before doors open.
Passivo con "going to": am / is / are going to + be + participio passato — per un'azione futura pianificata o prevista, la versione passiva delle forme di futuro con going to.
- The old cinema is going to be demolished next year.
- New safety rules are going to be introduced.
Il passivo con i verbi modali
I verbi modali come can, could, must, should, may, might, will e would formano il passivo mantenendo il modale al primo posto; al posto della forma base del verbo, però, trovi be + participio passato:
| Forma attiva | Forma passiva |
|---|---|
| You must submit the form by Friday. | The form must be submitted by Friday. |
| Someone can see the mountains from here. | The mountains can be seen from here. |
| They should fix the bug soon. | The bug should be fixed soon. |
| We might change the schedule. | The schedule might be changed. |
Per parlare di una possibilità o di un obbligo nel passato, si usa modale + have been + participio passato:
- The window could have been broken by the wind.
- The report should have been finished yesterday. (un obbligo non rispettato)
- The mistake must have been noticed by someone.
✅ must be checked (un obbligo presente/futuro) è diverso da ✅ must have been checked (una deduzione sul passato) — confonderli cambia completamente il significato: ❌ The parcel must have been delivered tomorrow mescola una forma di deduzione sul passato con un'espressione di tempo futuro, e questa combinazione non funziona.
Errori comuni
- ❌ Houses are build here. → ✅ Houses are built here. (participio passato, non la forma base)
- ❌ The road is repairing this week. → ✅ The road is being repaired this week.
- ❌ The documents have signed already. → ✅ The documents have been signed already.
- ❌ It must been fixed by tomorrow. → ✅ It must be fixed by tomorrow. (dopo un modale si usa be, non been, per un obbligo presente/futuro)
- ❌ The window must be broken by the wind last night. → ✅ The window must have been broken by the wind last night. (una deduzione sul passato ha bisogno di have been, non solo di be)
- ❌ The results will announced tomorrow. → ✅ The results will be announced tomorrow. (il passivo ha comunque bisogno di be dopo will — will da solo non forma un gruppo verbale passivo completo)
Verifica rapida
Scegli la forma passiva corretta:
- Right now, the kitchen ____ (renovate). (present continuous passivo)
- By 6 p.m., all the food ____ (eat). (future perfect passivo)
- When the new road ____ (add), the bridge ____ (already / build). (past simple + past perfect passivo)
- The results ____ (should / announce) by Friday.
- That noise we can hear right now ____ (must / cause) by the wind — it's really strong tonight.
Mostra le risposte
- The kitchen is being renovated.
- By 6 p.m., all the food will have been eaten.
- When the new road was added, the bridge had already been built.
- The results should be announced by Friday.
- That noise we can hear right now must be caused by the wind — una causa presente per qualcosa che sta succedendo proprio ora, quindi must be, non must have been (che descriverebbe un evento del passato).

Punti chiave
- Ogni forma passiva si costruisce su be + participio passato — il tempo verbale o il modale cambiano solo la parte con be.
- I passivi continuous aggiungono being: is being built, was being built.
- I passivi perfect aggiungono been: has been built, had been built, will have been built.
- Il passivo al futuro usa will o going to: will be built, is going to be built.
- I modali sono seguiti da be + participio passato per un significato presente/futuro (must be fixed), e da have been + participio passato per un significato passato (must have been fixed).
