Sie fragte, ob ich Zeit hätte, und bat mich, ihr zu helfen. She asked whether I had time, and asked me to help her.
Reported speech usually puts the quote in a subordinate clause; without dass, a reported statement keeps V2 word order. The verb goes into Konjunktiv I; this lesson is about the connector and the word order for each of the three sentence types.
Quick shortcut: statement → dass (or no connector, verb second); yes/no question → ob; W-question → keep the W-word; command → the modal sollen, reported like a statement, or a zu-infinitive after bitten / auffordern. With a connector, the finite verb goes to the end.
Reported statements
- Direct: "Ich komme morgen."
- Reported: Er sagt, dass er morgen komme. — or without dass: Er sagt, er komme morgen.
With dass the finite verb goes last; without dass it stays in second position. The verb form is Konjunktiv I — three time levels, no tense backshift.
Reported yes/no questions → ob
- Direct: "Kommst du mit?"
- Reported: Sie fragte, ob ich mitkäme.
ob means "whether / if". The finite verb goes to the end, and there is no dass and no wenn. This is the same ob as in indirect questions.
- ❌ Sie fragte, wenn ich mitkomme. → ✅ Sie fragte, ob ich mitkomme.
Reported W-questions → keep the question word
- Direct: "Wann fährt der Zug?"
- Reported: Er wollte wissen, wann der Zug fahre.
The W-word (wann, wo, warum, wie, wer, was, welch-…) stays and introduces the clause; the finite verb goes to the end.
- ❌ Er fragte, wann fährt der Zug. → ✅ Er fragte, wann der Zug fährt / fahre.
Reported commands and requests
German has no imperative in reported speech. There are two ways round it:
1. The modal sollen, reported like a statement — with dass (verb last) or without it (verb second):
- "Ruf mich an!" → Sie sagte, dass ich sie anrufen solle. — or Sie sagte, ich solle sie anrufen.
- "Sei bitte pünktlich." → Er sagte, ich solle pünktlich sein.
2. A zu-infinitive after verbs like bitten, auffordern, raten, empfehlen, befehlen:
- Sie bat mich, sie anzurufen.
- Der Arzt riet ihm, mehr zu schlafen.
Here the person addressed is the object of the main verb (mich, ihm), there is no Konjunktiv, and the clause is an ordinary zu-infinitive.
Pronouns, time and place shift with the viewpoint
Pronouns and words for time and place adapt to the reporter's viewpoint, changing where the context calls for it: ich → er / sie, mein → sein / ihr, hier → dort, morgen → am nächsten Tag, gestern → am Tag zuvor.
- "Ich sehe dich morgen." → Er sagte, er sehe mich am nächsten Tag.
This follows the situation, not a rule specific to German.
Word order at a glance
| Type | Connector | Finite verb |
|---|---|---|
| statement | dass / — | end / second |
| yes/no question | ob | end |
| W-question | the W-word | end |
| command | dass + sollen (or none), or zu-infinitive | end / second |
Common mistakes
- ❌ Er fragte, ob kommt sie mit. → ✅ Er fragte, ob sie mitkomme. (verb to the end after ob)
- ❌ Sie fragte, dass ob ich Zeit habe. → ✅ Sie fragte, ob ich Zeit habe. (one connector only)
- ❌ Sie fragte, wenn ich komme. → ✅ Sie fragte, ob ich komme. (ob, not wenn)
- ❌ Er bat mich, zu kommen früher. → ✅ Er bat mich, früher zu kommen. (zu + infinitive at the end)
- ❌ Er befahl, dass ich komme sofort. → ✅ Er befahl, ich solle sofort kommen.
- ❌ Er fragte, ob ich Zeit habe*?*** → ✅ Er fragte, ob ich Zeit habe*.*** (a reported question takes no question mark)

- Statement: dass (verb last) or no connector (verb second); mood from Konjunktiv I.
- Yes/no question: ob + verb last — never wenn, never dass.
- W-question: keep the W-word; verb goes last.
- Command / request: the modal sollen, reported like a statement, or a zu-infinitive after bitten / auffordern / raten.
- A reported question takes no question mark; pronouns, time and place words shift to the reporter's viewpoint.
