Questo libro è mio, ma quel libro e quella borsa sono di Anna. This book is mine, but that book and that bag are Anna's.

To point to something, Italian uses a demonstrative adjective before the noun: questo for things near you ("this") and quello for things farther away ("that"). Both agree with the noun, and quello takes the same forms as the definite article.

Quick shortcut: questo works like a regular adjective in -o (questo, questa, questi, queste). Quello follows the definite article: il libro → quel libro, lo studente → quello studente, l'amica → quell' amica, i libri → quei libri, gli amici → quegli amici, la casa → quella casa, le case → quelle case.

questo (this, these)

Questo has four forms, like any adjective ending in -o:

Singular Plural
masculine questo questo libro questi questi libri
feminine questa questa casa queste queste case

Before a vowel, the singular is often shortened with an apostrophe: quest'amico, quest'amica, quest'anno (this year). The plural does not change: questi amici, queste amiche.

  • Questa borsa è nuova. (This bag is new.)
  • Quest'anno studio italiano. (This year I'm studying Italian.)
  • Questa sera esco. (Tonight I'm going out.) The one-word form is stasera.

quello (that, those)

Quello changes like the definite article in front of the noun (see Definite articles):

Masculine Feminine
singular, before a consonant quel quel libro quella quella casa
singular, before s + consonant, z, gn, ps, pn, x, y quello quello studente, quello zaino quella quella scuola
singular, before a vowel quell' quell'amico quell' quell'amica
plural, before a consonant quei quei libri quelle quelle case
plural, before s + consonant, z, gn, ps, pn, x, y quegli quegli studenti quelle quelle scuole
plural, before a vowel quegli quegli amici quelle quelle amiche

The pairs match the article: il → quel, lo → quello, l' → quell', i → quei, gli → quegli, la → quella, le → quelle. The adjective bello follows the same pattern before a noun: un bel libro, un bello zaino, dei bei libri. See Adjective position.

Near and far

Choosing between the two is about distance from the speaker, in space or in time:

  • Questo libro è qui, quel libro è là. (This book is here, that book is over there.)
  • Voglio questa maglia o quella? (Do I want this sweater or that one?)
  • In quel ristorante mangio bene. (I eat well in that restaurant.)

No extra article

The demonstrative replaces the article, so you don't use both: ✅ questo libro, ❌ il questo libro.

Common mistakes

  • ❌ quel studente → ✅ quello studente (lo before s + consonant)
  • ❌ quello libro → ✅ quel libro (il before a plain consonant)
  • ❌ quel amico → ✅ quell'amico (before a vowel)
  • ❌ quelli libri → ✅ quei libri
  • ❌ quelle amici → ✅ quegli amici (masculine plural before a vowel)
  • ❌ questo casa → ✅ questa casa
  • ❌ il questo libro → ✅ questo libro

  • Questo, questa, questi, queste work like a regular adjective in -o; the singular can become quest' before a vowel.
  • Quello follows the definite article: quel, quello, quell', quella, quei, quegli, quelle.
  • No extra article: questo libro, not il questo libro.
  • Bello before a noun uses the same pattern (bel, bello, bell', bei, begli).
