Я даю книгу брату. Мне двадцать лет.I give the book to my brother. I am twenty.

The dative case answers кому? (to whom?) and чему? (to what?). It is the case of the person who receives something or is addressed: Я даю книгу брату. (I give a book to my brother.) Russian also uses it to say someone's age: Мне двадцать лет. (literally "to me twenty years").

Quick shortcut: the person who receives something or is spoken to is in the dative (брату, маме, мне); for age, put the person in the dative and add the number and год / года / лет (Мне двадцать лет).

The dative endings (singular)

Nominative Dative Example
masculine in a consonant брат, друг -у: брату, другу Я даю книгу брату. (I give the book to my brother.)

The pronouns in the dative

Nominative Dative Example

он, оно ему Я звоню ему. (I call him.)
она ей Я звоню ей. (I call her.)
мы нам Он помогает нам. (He helps us.)
вы вам Я даю вам книгу. (I give you the book.)

The other pronoun forms are in Personal pronouns in oblique cases.

Verbs that go with the dative

These common verbs take the person in the dative:

  • давать (to give): Я даю книгу брату. The verb is conjugated даю, даёшь, даёт, даём, даёте, дают.
  • дарить (to give as a present): Мы дарим маме цветы. (We give Mum flowers.)
  • говорить (to say, to tell): Я говорю другу правду. (I tell my friend the truth.)
  • писать (to write to): Он пишет Ане письмо. (He writes Anya a letter.)
  • звонить (to call): Я звоню маме. — here the dative alone, with no object.
  • помогать (to help): Он помогает брату. (He helps his brother.)

The person usually comes before the thing, but both orders are possible: Я даю брату книгу or Я даю книгу брату. The question is кому?: Кому ты даёшь книгу? — Брату.

Age with the dative

To say how old someone is, put the person in the dative and add the number and the word for "years". No verb is needed in the present tense:

  • Мне двадцать лет. (I am twenty.)
  • Сколько тебе лет? (How old are you?)
  • Ане пять лет. (Anya is five.)
  • Ему три года. (He is three.)
  • Маме сорок лет. (Mum is forty.)

The noun for "year" follows the rule of numbers from Cardinal numbers 1–20: год after 1 (мне один год), года after 2–4 (три года), лет after 5–20 (пять лет, двадцать лет). For ages above 20 the noun follows the last digit: двадцать один год, двадцать два года, двадцать пять лет; the numbers 11–14 always take лет (четырнадцать лет). The question word сколько is in Question words. For the past and the future, add было or будет: Мне было двадцать лет. (I was twenty.) Мне будет двадцать лет. (I will be twenty.)

Other uses you will meet

The dative also appears in common set phrases that you can learn now: Мне нравится музыка. (I like music.) Мне холодно. (I am cold.) Мне нужна помощь. (I need help.) In all of them the person who feels or needs something is in the dative.
