Кто это? Что ты делаешь? Где ты живёшь? Когда ты приходишь?Who is this? What are you doing? Where do you live? When do you come?
In a neutral question, Russian question words usually come at the start, followed by the rest of the sentence in the normal order. The eight to learn first are кто (who), что (what), где (where), когда (when), как (how), почему (why), куда (where to) and сколько (how many, how much).
Quick shortcut: a question word usually goes first (Где ты живёшь?); где asks where something is, куда asks where someone is going; кто is for people and что for things; and an ordinary yes-or-no question has the same words as a statement, only the intonation changes (Ты студент?).
The eight question words
| Question word | Asks about | Example |
|---|---|---|
| кто (who) | people | Кто это? — Это мой брат. (Who is this? This is my brother.) |
| что (what) | things, actions | Что это? — Это окно. (What is this? This is a window.) |
| где (where) | place, no movement | Где ты живёшь? — В Москве. (Where do you live? In Moscow.) |
| куда (where to) | direction | Куда ты идёшь? — В школу. (Where are you going? To school.) |
| когда (when) | time | Когда ты приходишь? — Вечером. (When do you come? In the evening.) |
| как (how) | manner, name | Как тебя зовут? — Меня зовут Аня. (What is your name? My name is Anya.) |
| почему (why) | reason | Почему ты не идёшь? — Потому что я работаю. (Why aren't you going? Because I'm working.) |
| сколько (how many, how much) | quantity | Сколько стоит книга? — Сто рублей. (How much does the book cost? A hundred roubles.) |
кто and что
Кто asks about people and что about things. To ask what someone does for a living, Russian still uses кто: Кто он? — Он врач. (What does he do? He is a doctor.) After кто the past-tense verb is usually masculine singular, even if the answer is plural: Кто пришёл? — Пришли Аня и Борис. (Who came? Anya and Boris came.)
Что ты делаешь? (What are you doing?) uses что with a verb. The two words have other forms in other cases (кого, чего, кому, чему), which come with each case lesson. The demonstrative это in Кто это? Что это? is explained in Demonstrative pronouns.
где, откуда and куда
Russian uses different question words for "where", depending on position, origin or movement:
- где? asks about the place where someone or something is: Где ты? Где мама? Где мой телефон? The answer uses в or на with the prepositional case, as in The prepositional case: location: в школе, на работе.
- откуда? asks where someone or something comes from: Откуда ты? — Из Москвы. (Where are you from? From Moscow.) The answer uses из or с with the genitive, which comes later.
- куда? asks about the destination: Куда ты идёшь? Куда вы едете? The answer uses в or на with the accusative case, as in The accusative case: direction with в/на: в школу, на работу.
когда, как, почему
- Когда? asks about time: Когда у тебя урок? — В пять часов.
- Как? asks about manner: Как ты работаешь? It is also used in fixed questions: Как дела? (How are things?) Как тебя зовут? (What is your name?) Как вас зовут? (What is your name, polite?)
- Почему? asks for a reason, and the answer often begins with потому что (because): Почему ты дома? — Потому что я болею. (Why are you at home? Because I'm ill.)
сколько
Сколько asks how many or how much. It is used in a few questions you need at once:
- Сколько стоит книга? (How much does the book cost?)
- Сколько времени? (What time is it? literally "how much time") — see also the form Который час? in Interrogative pronouns and adjective-like question words.
- Сколько тебе лет? (How old are you?) — see The dative case: addressee and age.
After сколько the thing counted is in the genitive plural (Сколько книг?) or genitive singular for uncountable things (Сколько воды?). The genitive plural comes later, in The genitive case: plural forms.
Yes-or-no questions
A question without a question word has the same words and order as a statement; only the intonation changes, with the pitch rising on the word you are asking about: Ты студент? (Are you a student?) Это твоя книга? (Is this your book?) The answers are да (yes) and нет (no): Да, это моя книга. Нет, это не моя книга.
Common mistakes

- ❌ Куда ты живёшь? → ✅ Где ты живёшь? (no movement: где)
- ❌ Потому ты не пришёл? → ✅ Почему ты не пришёл? (почему asks, потому что answers)
- ❌ Что он? (asking about a profession) → ✅ Кто он? (about a person, кто)
- ❌ Как ты зовут? → ✅ Как тебя зовут? (the fixed question uses тебя)

Key takeaways
- The question words are кто, что, где, когда, как, почему, куда, сколько, and they usually come first in the question.
- Где asks where something is (в / на + prepositional); куда asks where someone is going (в / на + accusative).
- Кто is for people and что for things; почему asks and потому что answers.
- A yes-or-no question keeps the words of the statement and only raises the intonation (Ты студент?).
