Я говорю по-русски. Ты говоришь по-английски.I speak Russian. You speak English.
Russian has two big groups of regular verbs. The first conjugation, whose ты / он / мы / вы endings contain an -е-, is in Present tense: first-conjugation verbs. This lesson is about the second group, the second conjugation, whose ты / он / мы / вы endings contain an -и-: -ишь, -ит, -им, -ите. Once you know them for one verb, you know them for many others.
Quick shortcut: for a regular verb, drop the infinitive ending (-ить, -еть, -ать, -ять) and add -ю · -ишь · -ит · -им · -ите · -ят. After ж, ч, ш, щ, the spelling is -у and -ат instead of -ю and -ят.
The endings
Take говорить (to speak, to say) and смотреть (to look at, to watch). Remove the infinitive ending to get the stems говор- and смотр-, then add:
| Person | Ending | говорить | смотреть |
|---|---|---|---|
| я | -ю | говорю | смотрю |
| ты | -ишь | говоришь | смотришь |
| он / она / оно | -ит | говорит | смотрит |
| мы | -им | говорим | смотрим |
| вы | -ите | говорите | смотрите |
| они | -ят | говорят | смотрят |
The pronouns are in Personal pronouns. Compare the two groups: the first conjugation has -ешь, -ет, -ем, -ете, and the second has -ишь, -ит, -им, -ите. The vowel in the ты / он / мы / вы endings (-е- or -и-) is the main clue to the group, and the они form differs too (-ют or -ут against -ят or -ат). Some verbs also change their stem, so it is best to learn the forms together with each new verb (see the stem-change lesson below).
Spelling after ж, ч, ш, щ
In the first-person singular and the third-person plural, the spelling after ж, ч, ш, щ is -у and -ат, not -ю and -ят:
- учить (to study, to learn) → учу, учишь, учит, учим, учите, учат
- держать (to hold) → держу, держишь, держит, держим, держите, держат
- слышать (to hear) → слышу, слышишь, слышит, слышим, слышите, слышат
Which verbs belong here
- Almost all verbs in -ить: говорить, любить (to love, to like), учить, ходить (to go on foot), курить (to smoke), платить (to pay). A few are first conjugation instead, for example жить, пить, мыть, бить, брить, стелить.
- Many verbs in -еть: смотреть, видеть (to see), сидеть (to sit), терпеть (to bear).
- A short list of verbs in -ать / -ять that are easy to forget: держать, дышать (to breathe), слышать, гнать (to drive), стоять (to stand), бояться (to be afraid).
The infinitive ending is a helpful guide rather than a guarantee, so it is worth learning the exceptions as separate words and checking the forms of each new verb.
In the "я" form, a consonant can change
Many second-conjugation verbs change one consonant in the я form only (the other five forms use the plain stem). This is the most common example: любить → люблю, любишь, любит, любим, любите, любят. Others: видеть → вижу, видишь…, ходить → хожу, ходишь…, платить → плачу, платишь… The pattern is explained in Present tense: common stem changes and irregular verbs.
One present tense for "now" and "usually"
As with the first conjugation, one present form covers both a habit and what is happening now: Он говорит по-русски. (He speaks Russian.) Сейчас он говорит по телефону. (He is talking on the phone now.) There is no separate "-ing" form.
Negatives and questions
A negative puts не before the verb: Я не говорю по-французски. (I don't speak French.) The full pattern is in Negation with "не".
A yes/no question usually keeps the word order and is marked by intonation: Вы говорите по-русски? (Do you speak Russian?)
Common mistakes
- ❌ Он говорет. → ✅ Он говорит. (the 3rd person singular takes -ит)
- ❌ Ты говорешь. → ✅ Ты говоришь. (ты takes -ишь after a second-conjugation stem)
- ❌ Мы говорем. → ✅ Мы говорим. (мы takes -им)
- ❌ Они говорют. → ✅ Они говорят. (the second conjugation has -ят, not -ют)
- ❌ Они учят. → ✅ Они учат. (-ят is written -ат after ч)
- ❌ Я любю. → ✅ Я люблю. (the я form of любить shows the alternation б → бл)
