Завтра я буду работать весь день. Что ты будешь делать?Tomorrow I will be working all day. What will you be doing?
The imperfective future is built from two words: a future form of быть and the imperfective infinitive of the verb. It describes a future action as a process, a repeated action or one with a duration: Я буду читать means "I will be reading" or "I will read (regularly)".
Quick shortcut: буду / будешь / будет / будем / будете / будут + the imperfective infinitive (читать, работать, делать). Only the form of быть changes; the infinitive stays the same.
The forms
The first word is the future of быть from The Russian future of быть. The second word never changes:
| Person | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| я | буду читать | Я буду читать. (I will be reading.) |
| ты | будешь читать | Ты будешь читать. (You will be reading.) |
| он, она, оно | будет читать | Она будет читать. (She will be reading.) |
| мы | будем читать | Мы будем читать. (We will be reading.) |
| вы | будете читать | Вы будете читать. (You will be reading.) |
| они | будут читать | Они будут читать. (They will be reading.) |
The infinitive is always an imperfective verb, as in Russian verbal aspect: imperfective and perfective: читать, писать, делать, смотреть, работать. The perfective partners (прочитать, написать, сделать) have their own future, described in Future tense: perfective (simple future).
When to use it
The imperfective future is used for:
- an action in the future seen as a process: Завтра я буду работать. (Tomorrow I will be working.)
- a repeated or habitual future action: Каждый день я буду заниматься русским. (Every day I will study Russian.)
- an action described by its duration: Мы будем ждать час. (We will wait for an hour.)
- the question about the future activity: Что ты будешь делать вечером? (What will you do in the evening?)
Words such as завтра, в субботу, каждый день, весь день, долго often go with it.
Questions and negatives
A yes/no question keeps the word order and is marked by intonation, and a question word can open it, as in Question words:
- Ты будешь читать? (Will you be reading?)
- Что вы будете делать завтра? (What will you be doing tomorrow?)
The negative puts не before буду, будешь…, as in Negation with "не":
- Я не буду работать в субботу. (I will not work on Saturday.)
- Они не будут спать. (They will not be sleeping.)
Reflexive verbs
A reflexive verb keeps its -ся / -сь ending in the infinitive:
- Я буду учиться. (I will study.)
- Мы будем заниматься вечером. (We will study in the evening.)
Common mistakes
- ❌ Завтра я буду прочитать книгу. → ✅ Завтра я буду читать книгу. (only an imperfective infinitive follows буду)
- ❌ Я будешь читать. → ✅ Я буду читать. (я takes буду)
- ❌ Мы будем читаем. → ✅ Мы будем читать. (the second verb is an infinitive, not a conjugated form)
- ❌ Она будет читал. → ✅ Она будет читать. (not the past form)

Key takeaways
- The imperfective future is буду / будешь / будет / будем / будете / будут + an imperfective infinitive (Я буду читать).
- It describes a future action as a process, a repeated action or an action with a duration.
- The negative is не буду читать, and a reflexive verb keeps its ending in the infinitive (буду учиться).
- A perfective infinitive never follows буду: the perfective has its own simple future (прочитаю).
