Я учусь в университете. Мы часто встречаемся в парке.I study at university. We often meet in the park.

Many Russian verbs end in -ся (or -сь). The ending, which comes from an old word for "oneself", is added at the very end of the verb, after all the other endings, and it changes the meaning: the action may come back to the person who does it (мыться, to wash oneself), be mutual (встречаться, to meet), or form a verb of their own (учиться, to study).

Quick shortcut: put -ся after a consonant or -ь and -сь after a vowel (он учится, я учусь), and remember that a reflexive verb normally takes no direct object in the accusative.

The forms

Reflexive verbs are conjugated like other verbs and keep -ся / -сь at the end. The patterns are those of Present tense: first-conjugation -е- endings (читать, знать) and Present tense: second-conjugation -и- endings (говорить, любить):

Person учиться (to study)
я учусь
ты учишься
он, она, оно учится
мы учимся
вы учитесь
они учатся

The past tense follows Past tense: the -л form: учился (he), училась (she), училось (it), учились (they). The ending is -ся after a consonant (учился, учимся) and -сь after a vowel (училась, учусь, учитесь), and the infinitive ends in -ться (учиться).

What -ся means

The action returns to the subject

The person acts on themselves:

  • Я умываюсь утром. (I wash my face in the morning.)
  • Дети купаются в реке. (The children are swimming in the river.)

The action is mutual

Two or more people do it to each other:

  • Мы часто встречаемся в парке. (We often meet in the park.)
  • Мы видимся каждый день. (We see each other every day.)

The word друг друга ("each other") that can accompany these verbs is in Reflexive and reciprocal pronouns (себя, друг друга); the person you meet is usually introduced by с and the instrumental, as in The instrumental case with "с" (together with).

The -ся form is a verb of its own

In many everyday verbs, -ся does not mean "oneself". The -ся form is a separate verb, and without -ся you get a verb with a different meaning (учить, to teach or to learn something specific), a different construction (называть, to name, takes an object), or only a rare verb that means something else (улыбаться has a rare relative улыбать, to make someone smile):

An event without naming who causes it

A verb with -ся can describe something that happens or changes without saying who does it. The same root without -ся takes an object (someone does something to it):

With an object With -ся
Он открывает дверь. (He opens the door.) Дверь открывается. (The door opens.)
Мама моет Аню. (Mum washes Anya.) Аня моется. (Anya washes.)

Урок начинается в девять. (The lesson starts at nine.) Магазин открывается в восемь. (The shop opens at eight.)

Reflexive verbs normally take no direct object

A verb with -ся is normally not followed by an accusative object. If the sentence needs an object, use the verb without -ся: ✅ Он моет руки (He washes his hands), ✅ Он моется (He washes himself), but never ❌ Он моется руки. In the imperative the ending stays: Садись! (Sit down!), as in The imperative mood (basic commands).

Common mistakes

  • ❌ Он учиться в школе. → ✅ Он учится в школе. (the third person of the present ends in -тся)
  • ❌ Я хочу учится. → ✅ Я хочу учиться. (the infinitive ends in -ться; both are pronounced alike, but are written differently)
  • ❌ Я учишься в университете. → ✅ Я учусь в университете. (the verb takes the ending for я, then -сь)
  • ❌ Он моется руки. → ✅ Он моет руки. (-ся verbs take no direct object)
  • ❌ Урок начинает в девять. → ✅ Урок начинается в девять. (the lesson starts, with no agent named)

Quick check

Put the verb in brackets into the correct form.

  1. Я ____ в университете. (учиться)
  2. Ты ____ в семь часов? (просыпаться)
  3. Как ____ эта улица? (называться)
  4. Мы часто ____ в парке. (встречаться)
  5. Дети ____ в реке. (купаться)
Show answers

Key takeaways

  • A reflexive verb ends in -ся after a consonant or -ь and in -сь after a vowel: учится, учился, учусь, училась; the infinitive is written -ться and the third person -тся, although they sound alike.
  • The ending can mean "oneself" (умываться), "each other" (встречаться), or form a verb of their own (учиться, улыбаться, называться).
  • Many pairs show the difference between doing something to a thing (открывать дверь) and an event without a named agent (дверь открывается).
  • A reflexive verb normally takes no direct object in the accusative.
