Я вижу себя в зеркале. Мы любим друг друга.I see myself in the mirror. We love each other.
Russian has two small pronouns for actions that come back to the subject or go back and forth between people: себя ("oneself": myself, yourself, himself, themselves) and друг друга ("each other"). Neither can be the subject of a sentence, so they only have the forms of the oblique cases.
Quick shortcut: себя (себе, собой) points back to the subject and has one form for every person; друг друга (другу, другом) means "each other" and needs a plural subject.
себя: oneself
Себя replaces myself, yourself, himself, herself, ourselves, themselves, so я, ты, он, мы, вы, они all use the same word:
| Case | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| accusative (and genitive) | себя | Я вижу себя в зеркале. (I see myself in the mirror.) |
| dative | себе | Он купил себе машину. (He bought himself a car.) |
| instrumental | собой | Возьми зонт с собой. (Take an umbrella with you.) |
| prepositional | (о) себе | Мы думаем о себе. (We think about ourselves.) |
The forms follow the cases from Personal pronouns in oblique cases (меня, мне, мной, о нём), and себя always refers to the subject of the clause, as свой does in The possessive pronoun свой. Compare Он видит себя (he sees himself) with Он видит его (he sees someone else).
Себя is part of many set phrases:
- Я хорошо себя чувствую. (I feel well.)
- Дети хорошо ведут себя. (The children behave well.)
- Он любит только себя. (He loves only himself.)
With many verbs Russian uses the ending -ся instead of себя, as in Reflexive verbs (-ся: учиться, называться, встречаться): Я моюсь is the usual neutral way to say "I wash myself"; Я мою себя is possible when the object needs emphasis or contrast. Себя is added when the focus is on the person (Он любит только себя) or when the verb has no -ся form.
друг друга: each other
Друг друга means that two or more people do the same thing to each other. The first word, друг, never changes, and the second one changes with the case:
| Case | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| accusative (and genitive) | друг друга | Мы любим друг друга. (We love each other.) |
| dative | друг другу | Они помогают друг другу. (They help each other.) |
| instrumental | друг другом | Они гордятся друг другом. (They are proud of each other.) |
| prepositional | (о) друг друге | Мы часто думаем друг о друге. (We often think about each other.) |
Вы знаете друг друга? (Do you know each other?)
A preposition goes between the two words, not before them: ✅ Они говорят друг с другом. (They talk to each other.) The same applies to друг для друга (for each other), друг к другу (toward each other) and друг о друге (about each other).
Verbs that already carry -ся and mean "each other" (встречаться, видеться) do not need друг друга: Мы часто встречаемся. (We often meet.) Use друг друга with other verbs: любить, знать, понимать, помогать.
себя or друг друга?
The two pronouns give different meanings:
- Они любят себя. (Each of them loves themselves.)
- Они любят друг друга. (They love each other.)
Common mistakes
- ❌ Я вижу себе в зеркале. → ✅ Я вижу себя в зеркале. (the object takes the accusative себя)
- ❌ Он купил ему машину. (meaning himself) → ✅ Он купил себе машину. (себе points back to the subject)
- ❌ Мы любим друг друг. → ✅ Мы любим друг друга. (the second word changes with the case)
- ❌ Они говорят с друг другом. → ✅ Они говорят друг с другом. (the preposition goes between the two words)
- ❌ Они любят себя. (meaning each other) → ✅ Они любят друг друга. (себя means each one loves themselves)
