Мы говорим о фильме. Я думаю о маме.We're talking about the film. I'm thinking about Mum.

To say what or who you are talking, thinking or writing about, Russian uses the preposition о (about) followed by a noun in the prepositional case. The questions are о чём? (about what?) and о ком? (about whom?). The endings are the same as in The prepositional case: location, so only the preposition is new.

Quick shortcut: о + prepositional case (о фильме, о маме); before а, э, и, о, у the preposition becomes об (об Англии, об этом), but it stays о before я, е, ё, ю (о Европе).

о, об and обо

The preposition has three forms, chosen by the sound that follows:

Form When Example
о before a consonant, and before я, е, ё, ю о книге, о маме, о Европе (about Europe)
об before the vowels а, э, и, о, у об Англии, об этом, об Иване, об уроке (about the lesson)
обо in a few common combinations, especially обо мне, обо всём, обо всех Он думает обо мне. (He's thinking about me.) Мы говорим обо всём. (We talk about everything.)

The change is for ease of speaking: об keeps two vowel sounds from running together.

Endings after о

The endings are those of the prepositional case:

Nominative After о Example
masculine фильм, брат, друг -е: фильме, брате, друге Мы говорим о фильме. (We're talking about the film.)
neuter море, письмо -е: море, письме Она пишет о море. (She's writing about the sea.)
feminine in -а, -я мама, школа, кухня -е: маме, школе, кухне Я думаю о маме. (I'm thinking about Mum.)
feminine in -ь тетрадь, жизнь -и: тетради, жизни Они говорят о жизни. (They're talking about life.)
in -ия, -ие Россия, здание -ии: России, здании Он рассказывает о России. (He's telling about Russia.)

After о the masculine nouns that have a stressed -у after в and на (в лесу, в саду) take the ordinary -е: ✅ о лесе, о саде, never ❌ о лесу. An adjective before the noun changes too: о новой школе (about a new school). In the plural the ending is -ах / -ях: о книгах (about books), о друзьях (about friends).

Verbs that go with о

These verbs are often followed by о:

  • говорить о (to talk about): Мы говорим о работе.
  • думать о (to think about): Я думаю о доме.
  • рассказывать о (to tell about): Она рассказывает о Москве.
  • мечтать о (to dream of): Он мечтает о море.
  • писать о (to write about): Они пишут о школе.
  • спрашивать о (to ask about): Я спрашиваю о цене. (I'm asking about the price.)

The verbs are conjugated as in Present tense: first-conjugation -е- endings and Present tense: second-conjugation -и- endings. In the meaning "about", о always takes the prepositional case.

о чём? and о ком?

Russian has two question words, depending on whether you ask about a thing or a person:

  • о чём? for things and ideas: О чём вы говорите? (What are you talking about?) — О работе.
  • о ком? for people: О ком ты думаешь? (Who are you thinking about?) — О брате.

The answer repeats the preposition and puts the noun in the prepositional case.

Pronouns after о

A personal pronoun after о has a special form, and the third-person pronouns start with an extra н-:

Nominative After о Example
я обо мне Он думает обо мне. (He's thinking about me.)
ты о тебе Мы говорим о тебе. (We're talking about you.)
он, оно о нём Я рассказываю о нём. (I'm telling about him.)
она о ней Они пишут о ней. (They're writing about her.)
мы о нас Он думает о нас. (He's thinking about us.)
вы о вас Мы говорим о вас. (We're talking about you.)
они о них Она рассказывает о них. (She's telling about them.)

Other cases of the pronouns are in Personal pronouns in oblique cases. The demonstrative это becomes этом, so "about this" is об этом: Мы говорим об этом. (We're talking about this.)

Common mistakes

  • ❌ Я думаю о мама. → ✅ Я думаю о маме. (о needs the prepositional: -а becomes -е)
  • ❌ Мы говорим о Англии. → ✅ Мы говорим об Англии. (об before a vowel)
  • ❌ Он рассказывает о лесу. → ✅ Он рассказывает о лесе. (the stressed -у is only for "where" after в / на)
  • ❌ Он думает о я. → ✅ Он думает обо мне. (the pronoun has its own form)
  • ❌ Мы говорим о он. → ✅ Мы говорим о нём. (он becomes нём)
