Das Hotel war teuer; trotzdem würde ich wieder dort übernachten. The hotel was expensive; even so, I'd stay there again.

A concessive connector first grants a point, then argues against it. German has several, and they differ in two ways: word order and register.

Quick shortcut: subordinator obwohl (formal: obgleich, obschon, wenngleich) sends the verb to the end. Conjunctional adverb trotzdem (formal: dennoch, gleichwohl, nichtsdestoweniger) opens a new main clause, so V2 puts the verb before the subject. Two-part zwar … aber links two main clauses.

Three ways to concede

Pattern Word order in the concession Example
obwohl + clause verb to the end Obwohl es regnete, gingen wir spazieren.
main clause + trotzdem / dennoch new main clause, V2 Es regnete. Trotzdem gingen wir spazieren.
zwaraber two main clauses Es regnete zwar, aber wir gingen spazieren.

All three say the same thing: it rained, and we went anyway.

obwohl and its formal siblings — verb to the end

obwohl is a subordinating conjunction: it opens a subordinate clause and the finite verb goes last.

  • Obwohl er kaum geübt hatte, bestand er die Prüfung.
  • Er bestand die Prüfung, obwohl er kaum geübt hatte.

In formal writing you will also meet obgleich, obschon and wenngleich — same grammar, higher register:

  • Der Plan wurde umgesetzt, wenngleich mit Verspätung.

trotzdem, dennoch, gleichwohl — a new main clause

These are conjunctional adverbs. They stand inside a main clause, most often in first position — and because the first position is filled, the V2 rule puts the finite verb before the subject:

  • Die Kritik war hart. Dennoch blieb er ruhig.
  • Or later in the clause: Die Kritik war hart. Er blieb dennoch ruhig.

When they connect two independent statements, they sit in the second main clause; syntactically, though, they are ordinary adverbs and can also appear inside a subordinate clause (…, weil er trotzdem blieb).

Register, low to high: trotzdem (neutral, common in speech) · dennoch (neutral to formal) · gleichwohl, nichtsdestoweniger (formal, written). nichtsdestotrotz is a colloquial blend of the two and is out of place in formal prose.

zwar … aber — concede and counter in one breath

zwar marks the concession, aber (or doch, jedoch) the point you actually want to make. zwar is an adverb, not a subordinator, so its clause keeps normal main-clause order:

  • Das Angebot ist zwar günstig, aber die Lieferzeit ist lang.
  • With zwar in first position, V2 applies: Zwar ist das Angebot günstig, aber …

The emphasis lands on the aber half — that is the point the speaker actually wants to make.

auch wenn and selbst wenn — even if

Both send the verb to the end, like obwohl.

  • Auch wenn concedes something real or hypothetical: Auch wenn es regnet, findet das Fest statt.
  • Selbst wenn pushes to an extreme, usually hypothetical case: Selbst wenn du dich entschuldigst, ändert das nichts.

Register at a glance

Neutral / spoken Formal / written
obwohl obgleich, obschon, wenngleich
trotzdem dennoch, gleichwohl, nichtsdestoweniger
aber jedoch, doch

The nominal option: trotz + genitive

To make the concession with a noun phrase rather than a clause, use the preposition trotz (+ genitive) — the same one taught with prepositions with the genitive:

  • Trotz des Regens gingen wir spazieren.
  • = Obwohl es regnete, gingen wir spazieren.

Common mistakes

  • Obwohl es regnet, wir gehen raus. → ✅ Obwohl es regnet, gehen wir raus. (verb last in the obwohl clause, then V2 in the main clause)
  • Trotzdem es regnet, gehen wir raus. → ✅ Obwohl es regnet, gehen wir raus. / ✅ Es regnet. Trotzdem gehen wir raus. (trotzdem is not a subordinator in the standard language)
  • Obwohl er müde war, aber er arbeitete weiter. → ✅ Obwohl er müde war, arbeitete er weiter. (don't add aber after an obwohl clause; Obwohl … trotzdem … for emphasis is fine)
  • Das Angebot ist zwar günstig, die Lieferzeit aber lang ist. → ✅ …, aber die Lieferzeit ist lang. (aber is coordinating — normal main-clause order after it)
  • Trotz dem Regen → ✅ Trotz des Regens (trotz takes the genitive in standard written German)

Quick check

Rewrite each sentence with the connector in brackets, fixing the word order.

  1. Es war spät. Wir arbeiteten weiter. (obwohl)
  2. Der Film war lang. Er war spannend. (trotzdem)
  3. Die Wohnung ist klein. Sie ist gemütlich. (zwar … aber)
  4. Ich rufe dich an. Auch bei schlechten Nachrichten. (selbst wenn)

Key takeaways

  • Subordinator obwohl (obgleich / obschon / wenngleich) → the verb goes to the end of its clause.
  • Conjunctional adverb trotzdem (dennoch / gleichwohl) → opens a new main clause; when it fills first position, the verb comes before the subject.
  • zwar … aber links two main clauses; the weight falls on the aber half.
  • auch wenn / selbst wenn work like obwohl (verb last); trotz + genitive makes the concession with a noun phrase instead of a clause.
  • Match the register: obwohl / trotzdem / aber for everyday use, wenngleich / gleichwohl / jedoch for formal writing.
