Some German connectors come in two pieces: the first announces the pattern, the second links the two items. The pieces are fixed pairs, and each can affect the word order.

Quick shortcut: entweder … oder, weder … noch, sowohl … als auch, nicht nur … sondern auch. Put the first piece right in front of the first item. When entweder, weder … noch or nicht nur opens a clause, the V2 rule swaps subject and verb in that half: Entweder kommst du mit, oder du bleibst hier.

The four main pairs

Word order — the tricky part

Where the connector joins just two words or phrases, nothing special happens:

  • Ich trinke weder Kaffee noch Tee.
  • Sowohl mein Bruder als auch meine Schwester wohnen in Berlin.

Where it joins two clauses, the position of the first piece can affect the word order.

entweder … oder. oder is a plain coordinating conjunction — it stays outside the clause and changes nothing. When entweder stands in first position, the V2 rule swaps subject and verb:

  • Entweder rufst du an, oder du schreibst eine Mail.
  • Or keep entweder inside the clause: Du rufst entweder an, oder du schreibst eine Mail.

(Entweder du rufst an …, with entweder set before the clause and no swap, is also common in speech.)

weder … noch. When the second coordinated clause begins with noch, the finite verb follows immediately:

  • Ich habe weder angerufen, noch habe ich geschrieben.

nicht nur … sondern auch. sondern is coordinating (no effect), but if nicht nur opens the sentence, that clause inverts:

  • Nicht nur hat er sich verspätet, sondern er hat auch den Bericht vergessen.

sowohl … als auch normally joins phrases, not clauses, so word order rarely comes up.

The verb: singular or plural?

sowohl … als auch adds the two subjects together, so the verb is plural:

  • Sowohl der Lehrer als auch die Schüler sind müde.

weder … noch traditionally agrees with the nearer subject, though a plural is just as common:

  • Weder der Chef noch die Mitarbeiter wissen Bescheid. (nearer subject plural)
  • Weder die Mitarbeiter noch der Chef weiß Bescheid. (nearer subject singular) — … noch der Chef wissen Bescheid is also heard.

weder … noch is already negative

Do not add another negative — no nicht, no kein:

  • ❌ Ich kenne weder ihn nicht noch seine Frau. → ✅ Ich kenne weder ihn noch seine Frau.
  • ❌ Es gibt weder kein Brot noch Milch. → ✅ Es gibt weder Brot noch Milch.

Keep the two halves parallel

Each half should bracket the same kind of element:

  • ✅ Er ist nicht nur reich, sondern auch großzügig. (two adjectives)
  • ✅ Sie hat sowohl in Berlin als auch in Wien studiert. (two phrases)

If the two elements cannot stay parallel, coordinate two full clauses instead:

  • ✅ Er ist nicht nur reich, sondern er hat auch viele Freunde.
  • ❌ Er ist nicht nur reich, sondern auch er hat viele Freunde. (adjective in one half, clause in the other)

A few more pairs

  • einerseits … andererseits — on the one hand … on the other: Einerseits will ich sparen, andererseits brauche ich ein Auto.
  • mal … mal — sometimes … sometimes: Mal ist es zu heiß, mal zu kalt.
  • teils … teils — partly … partly: Das Wetter war teils sonnig, teils bewölkt.
  • zwar … aber — admittedly … but: covered with the other concessive connectors.
  • je … desto — the more … the more: see je … desto / umso.

Common mistakes

  • ❌ Sowohl er als auch seine Brüder wohnt in Köln. → ✅ … wohnen in Köln. (sowohl … als auch → plural verb)
  • ❌ Ich mag sowohl Tee also auch Kaffee. → ✅ … sowohl Tee als auch Kaffee.
  • ❌ Weder ich habe Zeit noch Geld. → ✅ Ich habe weder Zeit noch Geld. (put weder right before the first item)
  • ❌ Sie spricht nicht nur Deutsch, aber auch Englisch. → ✅ … nicht nur Deutsch, sondern auch Englisch. (the pair is nicht nur … sondern auch)
  • ❌ Weder er noch seine Kollegen war im Büro. → ✅ Weder er noch seine Kollegen waren im Büro.
