Domani parlerò con il direttore.Tomorrow I'll talk to the manager.

The futuro semplice is used to talk about the future: plans, predictions and promises. You build it from the infinitive with a set of endings, and the endings are the same for all three verb groups.

Quick shortcut: infinitive (without the final -e, and -are becomes -er-) + -ò, -ai, -à, -emo, -ete, -anno: parlare → parlerò, prendere → prenderò, partire → partirò.

1. The regular forms

For -are verbs, -are is replaced by -er-: parlare → parler-. For -ere and -ire verbs the stem is the infinitive without the final -e: prender-, partir-. The endings are the same for all three:

parlare prendere partire Ending
io parlerò prenderò partirò -ò
tu parlerai prenderai partirai -ai
lui / lei / Lei parlerà prenderà partirà -à
noi parleremo prenderemo partiremo -emo
voi parlerete prenderete partirete -ete
loro parleranno prenderanno partiranno -anno

Only the endings -ò and -à carry a written accent, because the stress falls on them: parlerò, parlerà. The other forms have no written accent: parlerai, parleremo, parleranno.

2. Spelling changes

To keep the sound of the stem, some -are verbs change in spelling before the e:

  • -care / -gare add an h: cercare → cercherò, pagare → pagherò, dimenticare → dimenticherò
  • -ciare / -giare drop the i: cominciare → comincerò, mangiare → mangerò, viaggiare → viaggerò

3. Irregular stems

Some very common verbs have a shortened or changed stem, but the endings stay the same:

Verb Stem Example (io)
essere sar- sarò
avere avr- avrò
andare andr- andrò
potere potr- potrò
dovere dovr- dovrò
sapere sapr- saprò
vedere vedr- vedrò
vivere vivr- vivrò
venire verr- verrò
volere vorr- vorrò
rimanere rimarr- rimarrò
bere berr- berrò
fare, dare, stare far-, dar-, star- farò, darò, starò

For these verbs in the present tense, see Essere, Avere and Modal verbs: potere, volere, dovere.

4. When to use it

  • Plans and promises: L'anno prossimo andrò in Giappone. Ti chiamerò domani.
  • Predictions: Domani pioverà. Sarai felice di vivere lì.
  • Time words: domani, dopodomani, la settimana prossima, tra due giorni, un giorno, presto.

Italian often uses the present instead of the future for plans that feel certain or near: Domani vado a Roma. (I'm going to Rome tomorrow.) Both are correct.

After quando (when) and appena (as soon as), Italian often uses the future where English uses the present: Quando arriverò, ti telefonerò. (When I arrive, I'll call you.)

For "if" sentences about the future (Se piove, resterò a casa), see Real conditions.

5. A guess about now

The futuro semplice is also used to guess about the present: Che ore sono? — Saranno le tre. (It must be about three.) Dov'è Marco? — Sarà a casa. (He's probably at home.)

Common mistakes

  • ❌ Parlarò → ✅ Parlerò (-are verbs change to -er-)
  • ❌ Cercerò → ✅ Cercherò (h keeps the hard sound)
  • ❌ Mangierò → ✅ Mangerò (the i drops)
  • ❌ Averò → ✅ Avrò (irregular stem)
  • ❌ Parlera → ✅ Parlerà (the written accent on -à)
