Stamattina mi sono svegliata tardi e mi sono vestita in fretta. This morning I woke up late and got dressed in a hurry.

In the passato prossimo, every reflexive verb takes essere, never avere. The reflexive pronoun goes before essere, and the participle agrees with the subject, as in Passato prossimo with essere.

Quick shortcut: reflexive pronoun + essere + participle in -o / -a / -i / -e: mi sono lavato (man), mi sono lavata (woman), ci siamo lavati (men or mixed), ci siamo lavate (women).

The forms

Compare the present of Reflexive verbs (present tense) with the passato prossimo:

Subject Pronoun + essere lavarsi divertirsi
io mi sono lavato / lavata divertito / divertita
tu ti sei lavato / lavata divertito / divertita
lui / lei si è lavato / lavata divertito / divertita
noi ci siamo lavati / lavate divertiti / divertite
voi vi siete lavati / lavate divertiti / divertite
loro si sono lavati / lavate divertiti / divertite

Examples:

  • Ieri mi sono alzato alle sei. (Yesterday I got up at six.)
  • Anna si è addormentata subito. (Anna fell asleep right away.)
  • Ci siamo divertiti molto alla festa. (We had a lot of fun at the party.)

Body parts and clothes

The participle agrees with the subject, not with the body part or the clothing:

  • Mi sono lavata le mani. (I washed my hands.) [a woman speaking]
  • Si è messo il cappotto. (He put on his coat.)
  • Si sono pettinate i capelli. (They combed their hair.) [all women]

Note that messo is an irregular participle, see Common irregular past participles.

Reciprocal verbs

The plural forms can mean "each other":

  • Ci siamo visti ieri. (We saw each other yesterday.)
  • Si sono abbracciati subito. (They hugged each other right away.)

Negatives and questions

Non goes before the reflexive pronoun, and the word order of a question stays the same:

  • Non mi sono alzata presto. (I didn't get up early.)
  • A che ora ti sei svegliato? (What time did you wake up?)
  • Vi siete divertiti? (Did you have fun?)

Common mistakes

  • ❌ Mi ho alzato presto. → ✅ Mi sono alzato presto. (reflexive verbs take essere)
  • ❌ Maria si è alzato. → ✅ Maria si è alzata. (the participle agrees with the subject)
  • ❌ Ci siamo divertito molto. → ✅ Ci siamo divertiti molto. (plural subject, plural participle)
  • ❌ Sono mi lavato. → ✅ Mi sono lavato. (the pronoun goes before essere)

  • The participle agrees with the subject: -o, -a, -i, -e, even when there is a body part or clothing object (Si è lavata le mani).
  • Non goes before the pronoun: Non mi sono alzata.
  • Plural forms can be reciprocal: Ci siamo visti.
