Non parlare così forte, per favore!Don't talk so loudly, please!
To tell one friend, family member or child you call tu not to do something, Italian puts non in front of the infinitive. You don't need to change the verb at all: parlare becomes Non parlare!
Quick shortcut: affirmative = the tu imperative (Parla!); negative = non + infinitive (Non parlare!). Pronouns can go before the infinitive or attach to its end: Non lo fare / Non farlo.
1. Non + infinitive
The same pattern works for every verb, whether it is regular or irregular:
| Verb | Affirmative (tu) | Negative (tu) |
|---|---|---|
| parlare | Parla! | Non parlare! |
| scrivere | Scrivi! | Non scrivere! |
| dormire | Dormi! | Non dormire! |
| finire | Finisci! | Non finire! |
| essere | Sii gentile! | Non essere cattivo! |
| fare | Fai attenzione! | Non fare rumore! |
| andare | Vai via! | Non andare via! |
| dire | Di' la verità! | Non dire bugie! |
So you only need the infinitive, and the irregular tu commands (sii, fai, vai, di') disappear in the negative. For the affirmative forms, see Informal commands with tu.
2. Examples you can use every day
- Non preoccuparti. / Non ti preoccupare. (Don't worry.)
- Non dimenticare le chiavi. (Don't forget the keys.)
- Non mangiare tutto. (Don't eat everything.)
- Non aspettarmi. / Non mi aspettare. (Don't wait for me.)
- Non fare tardi. (Don't be late.)
- Non avere paura. (Don't be afraid.)
You can soften the command with per favore or dai (an informal "come on"): Dai, non essere triste. (Come on, don't be sad.) Non parlare così forte, per favore.
3. Pronouns: before or after
With a negative command, short pronouns have two possible places. You can put them before the infinitive, or attach them to the end of it (the infinitive then drops its final -e). Both are fine:
| Before the infinitive | Attached to the infinitive |
|---|---|
| Non lo fare. | Non farlo. (Don't do it.) |
| Non mi chiamare. | Non chiamarmi. (Don't call me.) |
| Non ti preoccupare. | Non preoccuparti. (Don't worry.) |
| Non me lo dire. | Non dirmelo. (Don't tell me.) |
A pronoun takes only one place: ❌ Non lo farlo has it twice. For pronoun position in general, see Position of object pronouns. For reflexive verbs such as preoccuparsi, see Reflexive verbs (present tense).
4. Add a negative word
You can use the negative words from Negative words and double negation in the same sentence. Non stays in front:
- Non dire niente a nessuno. (Don't tell anyone anything.)
- Non fare mai così. (Never do that.)
- Non uscire più da solo. (Don't go out alone any more.)
5. Only for tu
The non + infinitive pattern is only for tu. For other people the negative command looks different:
| Person | Negative command | Example |
|---|---|---|
| tu | non + infinitive | Non parlare! |
| Lei (formal) | non + Lei form | Non parli! |
| voi (a group) | non + voi form | Non parlate! |
For commands to Lei, see Formal commands with Lei.
Common mistakes
- ❌ Non parla! → ✅ Non parlare! (parla after non is a statement, not a command)
- ❌ Non parli! (to a friend) → ✅ Non parlare! (Non parli is the form for Lei)
- ❌ Non mi chiama! → ✅ Non mi chiamare! (the command needs the infinitive)
- ❌ Non vai via! → ✅ Non andare via! (use the infinitive, not vai)
- ❌ Non lo farlo. → ✅ Non farlo. / Non lo fare. (choose one place for the pronoun)
