Penso che Marco parli bene l'inglese.I think Marco speaks English well.
The congiuntivo presente is a verb form you meet after expressions of opinion, wish, doubt or feeling, usually introduced by che. This article is only about how to build it. When to choose it over the indicative has its own articles, linked below.
Quick shortcut: -are verbs take -i, -ere and -ire verbs take -a: che io parli, che io scriva, che io dorma. The three singular persons are identical, and noi is the same as in the present indicative.
Regular verbs
Take the io form of the present indicative, drop the final -o, and add the endings. The big switch: -are verbs change to -i, and -ere / -ire verbs change to -a. The vowel is "the opposite" of the indicative.
| Subject | -are (parlare) | -ere (scrivere) | -ire (dormire) | -ire with -isc- (finire) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| che io | parli | scriva | dorma | finisca |
| che tu | parli | scriva | dorma | finisca |
| che lui / lei / Lei | parli | scriva | dorma | finisca |
| che noi | parliamo | scriviamo | dormiamo | finiamo |
| che voi | parliate | scriviate | dormiate | finiate |
| che loro | parlino | scrivano | dormano | finiscano |
What to notice:
- io, tu and lui / lei share one form. Che io parli, che tu parli, che lui parli all look the same. When the subject is not clear from context, Italian speakers add the pronoun: Penso che tu abbia ragione.
- noi is identical to the present indicative: parliamo, scriviamo, dormiamo, finiamo.
- voi takes -iate: parliate, scriviate, dormiate. The indicative has parlate, scrivete, so there is a visible difference.
- loro takes -ino for -are verbs and -ano for the others, with the same vowel as the singular.
- Verbs that follow the -isc- pattern in the indicative (finire, capire, preferire) keep it in the same persons here: che capisca, che preferiscano. See Present tense: -ire verbs.
Spelling: sounds that must not change
The hard sound of c and g is kept by adding an h before the ending -i:
| Infinitive | Subjunctive (tu / noi) |
|---|---|
| cercare | che tu cerchi, che noi cerchiamo |
| pagare | che tu paghi, che noi paghiamo |
| dimenticare | che tu dimentichi |
Verbs in -ciare, -giare and most other -iare verbs do not double the i:
- cominciare → che tu cominci, che noi cominciamo (not ❌ cominciiamo)
- mangiare → che tu mangi, che noi mangiamo
- studiare → che tu studi, che noi studiamo
A few verbs whose i is stressed in the io form keep both: inviare → che tu invii, che loro inviino. Those are best learned one by one.
Common irregular verbs
Many everyday verbs have an irregular stem in the singular and in loro, while noi matches the present indicative and voi ends in -iate.
| Verb | io / tu / lui | noi | voi | loro |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| essere | sia | siamo | siate | siano |
| avere | abbia | abbiamo | abbiate | abbiano |
| andare | vada | andiamo | andiate | vadano |
| fare | faccia | facciamo | facciate | facciano |
| dire | dica | diciamo | diciate | dicano |
| venire | venga | veniamo | veniate | vengano |
| uscire | esca | usciamo | usciate | escano |
| potere | possa | possiamo | possiate | possano |
| volere | voglia | vogliamo | vogliate | vogliano |
| dovere | debba (also deva) | dobbiamo | dobbiate | debbano (also devano) |
| sapere | sappia | sappiamo | sappiate | sappiano |
| dare | dia | diamo | diate | diano |
| stare | stia | stiamo | stiate | stiano |
| bere | beva | beviamo | beviate | bevano |
A handy pattern: most irregular stems come from the io form of the indicative (vado → vada, faccio → faccia, dico → dica, vengo → venga, esco → esca, posso → possa, voglio → voglia). The exceptions to learn separately are essere, avere, sapere, dare, stare and dovere.
For the indicative forms these come from, see Common irregular verbs in the present and Other common irregular verbs.
Connecting it to a sentence
The congiuntivo presente usually sits in a clause introduced by che (or by a conjunction like affinché or benché), after a main clause that triggers it:
- Credo che Anna sia a casa. (I think Anna is at home.)
- Voglio che tu venga con me. (I want you to come with me.)
- Spero che abbiate tempo. (I hope you have time.)
- Non penso che loro possano venire. (I don't think they can come.)
Which verbs and expressions call for it is covered separately: Congiuntivo: wishes and opinions, Congiuntivo: emotions, Congiuntivo: doubt and Congiuntivo or indicativo?.
The same forms also appear outside a che clause: the formal imperative with Lei is the subjunctive form (Parli più piano, per favore). See The formal imperative with Lei.

Key takeaways
- -are verbs take -i; -ere and -ire verbs take -a (parli, scriva, dorma); -isc- verbs keep -isc- in the singular and in loro (finisca, finiscano).
- io, tu and lui / lei share one form, so the subject pronoun is often added (che tu abbia).
- noi = the present indicative form; voi takes -iate; loro takes -ino (-are) or -ano.
- Keep the hard sound with -chi / -ghi (cerchi, paghi) and do not usually double the i (cominci, mangi, studi).
- Learn the irregulars: sia, abbia, vada, faccia, dica, venga, esca, possa, voglia, debba, sappia, dia, stia, beva.
